Chūō ku, Chuuoo Ku 中央区 Chuo Ward "Central Ward"

- quote
is a special ward that forms part of the heart of Tokyo, Japan. The ward refers to itself in English as Chūō City. It was formed in 1947 as a merger of Kyobashi and Nihonbashi wards following Tokyo City's transformation into Tokyo Metropolis.
Chūō-ku, as a combination of Kyobashi and Nihonbashi, is the core of Shitamachi, the original downtown center of Edo-Tokyo. Literally meaning "Central Ward", it is historically the main commercial center of Tokyo, although Shinjuku has risen to challenge it since the end of World War II.
The most famous district in Chūō is Ginza, built on the site of a former silver mint from which it takes its name. The gold mint, or Kinza (金座), formerly occupied the site of the present-day Bank of Japan headquarters building, also in Chūō.
- - - - - History
1612: Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, planning to establish Edo as the de facto capital of Japan, begins work on a new commercial district surrounding the eastern end of the Tōkaidō, the main road connecting Tokyo and the Kansai region. During the Edo period this area is known as Edomachi—the town center of Edo. Much of the area (particularly Ginza and Tsukiji) was loose sand piled at the delta of the Sumida River before being filled in by the shogunate.
1657: After a fire consumes much of the city, the area is re-planned with more canals to accommodate more maritime commerce. .....

PERSONS - Watanabe noTsuna

https://darumapilgrim.blogspot.com/2012/12/rashomon-gate.html

羅城門の鬼、羅生門の鬼
The Demon of Rashomon

The story is told in the Noh play by Kanze Nobumitsu.
The hero Watanabe no Tsuna fights against a demon ((Ibaraki doji)

quote
Watanabe-no-Tsuna, one of the four followers of Minamoto-no-Raiko, heard that the ogres dwelling on Oyeyama Hill had slipped into the city of Kyoto from Rashomon and were making a lot of mischief. When he went to Rashomon himself, Tsuna was attacked by Shutendoji, the chief of the ogres. In the fight, he cut off one of the arms of Shutendoji, who, however, managed to escape.

After consulting Abe-no-Seimei, a court wizard, he put the severed arm in a strong stone chest, keeping it locked up for seven days. But on the night of the seventh day, an old woman claiming to be Tsuna's aunt came to his door and begged him to show her the ogre's arm. When Tsuna granted her wish and opened the chest, the woman grabbed the arm, instantly turned into an ogre, and ran for Oeyama Hill. Tsuna told the story to Raiko, and vowed to march to Oyeyama Hill and vanquish the ogres there someday.

Raiko is usually accompanied by his four legendary retainers, known as the Shiten'ō 四天王 (The Four Guardian Kings). They were
Watanabe no Tsuna, Sakata no Kintoki, Urabe no Suetake, and Usui Sadamitsu.

Tsuna and 茨木童子 / 茨城童子 the Ibaraki-doji
The battle raged on until Tsuna drew his sword and severed the arm of the demon. Screaming in pain Ibaraki-doji ran away from Tsuna, leaving the severed arm behind. Tsuna swept up Ibaraki-doji's arm as a trophy. When he arrived home at his mansion he wrapped up the severed arm and locked it away in a chest.
A few days later, an elderly woman claiming to be Tsuna's aunt, Mashiba, came to visit him. During the conversation, she aunt asked her nephew to recount how he fought with the demon, and when Tsuna mentioned that he had the severed arm in his possession, his aunt was curious and asked to see it. The unsuspecting Tsuna brought out the chest with Ibaraki-doji's arm inside and when he removed the arm, his aunt revealed herself as being Ibaraki-doji in disguise. She grabbed the arm and escaped from Tsuna's mansion. Tsuna was astonished that Ibaraki-doji had posed as his elderly aunt and did not give chase. However, even after retrieving the arm, Ibaraki-doji never returned to dwell at Rashomon Gate again.

The lord of the 伯太藩 Hakata domain, 渡辺氏 Watanabe, was the grandchild of Watanabe no Tsuna.
The family tells the story of Mashiba, coming to get the arm by destroying the lattice from the roof window to let the Oni flee.
To honor this event, the family never built a kitsunegoshi lattice on their roof.

Shinbashi, Shimbashi 新橋 "new bridge" district, Minato
Nishi-Shinbashi, Higashi-Shinbashi

- quote
... located south of Ginza, west of Tsukiji, east of Toranomon and north of Hamamatsucho.
- - - - - History
The area was the site of a bridge built across the 汐溜川 Shiodome River in 1604.
The original name of the bridge was 芝口橋 Shibaguchibashi.
The river was later filled in. Shinbashi was the Tokyo terminus of the first railway in Japan in 1872. It remains a major railway hub and has since developed into a commercial center, most recently with the construction of the Shiodome "Shiosite" high-rise office complex.
- source : wikipedia

.......................................................................

- quote -
Shinbashi is the salarymen capital of Tokyo; so that means one thing—it's full of people and it's one of the most hectic parts of the city come rush hour. Outside of the commute, it's a hub for some of the most rustic izakaya in the city and boasts great entertainment. With its super central location and heap of bars that are well dispersed over the area, it's a popular hangout spot. Shinbashi also happens to be home of the oldest 'pink cinemas' which started the beginning of the very successful porn industry in Japan.
On a very different note, Shinbashi is also known for being Tokyo's first railway terminal.

- quote
It is also called Minato City in English.
It was formed on March 15, 1947 as a merger of Akasaka, Azabu and Shiba wards following Tokyo City's transformation into Tokyo Metropolis. The modern Minato ward exhibits the contrasting Shitamachi and Yamanote geographical and cultural division. The Shinbashi neighborhood in the ward's northeastern corner is attached to the core of Shitamachi, the original commercial center of Edo-Tokyo. On the other hand, the Azabu and Akasaka areas are typically representative Yamanote districts.

EDO - Takaido village, Horikane no I

https://edoflourishing.blogspot.com/2018/06/suginami-ward.html

Shooanmura 松庵村 Shoan village
杉並区松庵 Suginami ward 松庵一丁目から松庵三丁目 from the first to the third sub-district
In the South-West of Suginami ward.

The river 松庵川 Shoangawa used to pass through the village. Now it is put under ground.

The wilderness was developed for farming in the Edo period by
荻野松庵 doctor Ogino Shoan. He died in 1665.
He was probably also the head priest of the temple 円光寺 Enko-Ji.
The region was first called 松庵新田 Shoan Shinden. Around 1716, it was named Shoan Mura.
In 1889, it became 高井戸村 Takaido mura.
In 1932, it was divided into North Shoan 松庵北町 and South Shoan 松庵南町.
In 1969, the first and second sub-district of Takaido were finally named Shoan first to third sub-district.

......................................................................

西高井戸松庵稲荷神社 Nishi-Takai Shoan Inari Jinja

- Deity in residence
受持命 Ukemochi no Mikoto

It was a shrine in the precincts of temple Enko-Ji, where Ogino Shoan was active.
Shoan is venerated in this shrine as protector deity of the area. His grave is in the North of the Shrine, where the temple Enko-Ji used to be before shrine and temple had to be separated in the Meiji period.
There are two memorial towers in the precinct, one with the inscription
武州野方領松庵新田

To the left of the torii 鳥居 entrance gate there is another small shrine venerating 狐のミイラ the mummy of a fox.

On an artificial hill beside the temple Enko-Ji there was a hole where a mother fox brought up her children.
When the temple had to be removed, the hill was also destroyed and the foxes had to go. Mother fox was so frustrated and sad, she bit off her front legs and died under the veranda of the temple.
The mummy shows a mother fox with her mouth biting the front legs. But it is not shown any more. There are countless small statues of the Inari fox in front of the sanctuary.

Kami-Takaido was allowed to operate on the first 15 days of a lunar month, Shimo-Takaido on the last 15 days of a lunar month. The postal station provides porters and pack horses, but it was not a very busy station, since few Daimyo had to pass here.

高井戸, takai ido "high well"
The original name refers to
takai o-doo 高いお堂 a high Temple hall
soon written 高井堂.
The temple was 宗源寺 Sogen-ji. It had a Hall for Fudo Myo-O 不動堂 at the sub-temple 本覚院 Hongaku-In, which was located on a high plateau, hence the name.

How is the relation to the well?
In 1486, a guide book by priest 道興准后 Doko Jugo (1430 - 1527) walking in the area mentions a pond
horikane no i ほりかねの井 / 堀兼の井 / 堀兼之井 / 堀難之井 , which is now called Takaido.

Doko Jugo wrote a waka poem at the well, which had been dried out by the time he visited Musashino:

At Katashina village, the farmers from the hamlets 上小川、穴沢、仲井 and 下小川 all climb up together to Mount Shiranesan.
In former times it used to be the 16th day of the 6th lunar month, but recently it could also be in the 8th month. People who have to climb up use the time from the 12th day of the 6th lunar month to start preparing shoojin ショウジン with ritual purifications and then all the men gather at one place to climb up.
If a woman climbs up, she will be picked up by a Tengu and thrown down the valley.

by and said he could do it.
The priest said he was 赤木山の杉の坊 Akagiyama no Sugi no Bo, the Monk of

He asked all the villagers to put out the fires for one night - and oh
wonder, the next morning the temple with all its buildings was

They were most beautiful in the old homes without electricity, to be enjoyed in lamp light.
Locally, they are called "tsuchi biina つちびーな", clay hina dolls, since they were mostly made for the Dolls Festival.

The first generation was Maeda Saburoo-emon 前田三良右衛門, who died in 1913.
He was a tile maker and adapted his skills to make dolls similar to the Fushimi dolls.
The master of the third generation, Maeda Toshio 前田俊夫, died in 1968 and then they became extinct.

Imoseyama Onna Teikin
The play "Imoseyama Onna Teikin" was originally written for the puppet theater (Bunraku) and staged for the first time in the 1st lunar month of 1771 in Ôsaka at Takeda Shinmatsu's theater (ex-Takemotoza). It was quickly adapted for Kabuki and staged in Kyôto in the 3rd lunar month of 1771 at the Kitagawa no Shibai [casting]. It was a long run, produced from the 25th of March to the 10th of the 5th lunar month of 1771.
This play is based on the Taika coup d'etat in 645,
in which Emperor Tenchi, with his loyal minister Fujiwara no Kamatari, succeeded in destroying the wicked Soga no Iruka.
- - - - - The drama "Imoseyama Onna Teikin" is made up of 5 acts:

The actors Arashi Koroku IV (bottom/left), Nakamura Utaemon III (middle) and Bandô Mitsugorô III (top/right) playing the roles of Omiwa, Fukashichi and Soga no Iruka in the "Mikasayama Goten" act, which was staged in the 3rd lunar month of 1821 at the Kado no Shibai

Morikawa Inari 森川稲荷, 三光院いなり Sanko-In Inari, 腰掛稲荷 Koshikake Inari
On the 11th day of the second lunar month in 1827, on the night before the festival of the First Day of the Horse, the low-ranking Samurai 幸吉 Kokichi from 新道一番町 Shindo Ichibancho told his master that he was off to the Morikawa Inari shrine, where he lived.
Next morning his master found a wooden statue of Inari at his doorstep.
From this day on, if he had a wish to make to Inari, he would ask Kokichi to mediate for him.
On the first day of the third lunar month, his master and 若殿 the young lord made an offering of ritual Sake for the Deity. Looking closer the next day, half of the Sake and the other food offerings were gone.
So they thought the Inari deities from Sanko-In and the Koshikake Inari had come too.

Mitaka Kami-Renjaku 三鷹上連雀村 Renjaku village district in Mitaka
三鷹市 Mitaka city, 三鷹上連雀一丁目から上連雀九丁目 from the first to the ninth sub-district

The new farming area was called 連雀前新田 Renjaku-mae Shinden New Fields in 1957, after 明暦の大火 the Great Fire of Meireki.
Mitaka used to be the hawking area of the Tokugawa Shoguns.

Mitaka city 三鷹市 "three hawks"
is located on the Kantō Plain, just outside the 23 special wards of Tokyo Metropolis, which are on its eastern borders.
The Tamagawa Josui Canal, which runs alongside Mitaka station, has an important place in history, built in 1653 to feed the local metropolis. It is also the place where novelist Osamu Dazai committed suicide in 1948. The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan is located in Mitaka.
- History
The area of present-day Mitaka was part of ancient Musashi Province. In the post-Meiji Restoration catastral reform of July 22, 1878, the area became part of Kitatama District in Kanagawa Prefecture.
The village of Mitaka was created on April 1, 1889 with the establishment of municipalities law. Kitatama District was transferred to the administrative control of Tokyo Metropolis on April 1, 1893. Mitaka was raised to town status in 1940.
Mitaka City was officially founded on November 3, 1950. A motion to merge with neighboring Musashino City failed in 1955 by only a single vote in the Mitaka city assembly.

unagi kaidoo うなぎ街道 Unagi Kaido Highway

From Izumo, 安来港 Yasugi port over the mountains to 勝山町 Katsuyama (Okayama).
From Katsuyama by boat downriver to Okayama, from there to Osaka.

The porters had to be very strong to carry about 30 kg of eel in two baskets on shoulder poles, stopping every 4 km to water the fish, running day and night for four days.
Along the road were houses with Unagi ponds especially for this transport.
The most difficult part was the pass 四十曲峠 Shijumagaritoge with 40 bending curves.
The runners were under the special protection of 聖護院宮 Shogoin no Miya, a temple in Kyoto and ferry boats had to come back from the river to give them a first go.
