These small dolls are suspended from the ceiling, an umbrella or a large branch in the room decorated for the Girl's Hina Doll Festival on March 3.

They are often made by mother or grandmother with special wishes for the child to grow up healthy, wealthy and well.
Some villages and towns hold special exhibitions during February and March to show these family treasures.

from Yanagawa town 柳川地区
They are exhibited from the first day of the third lunar month to the 3rd day of the fourth lunar month for people as they walk along the town shops.



They have seven strings with 7 dolls each and 2 more balls in the middle. Two decorations form a set hung at each side of the Hind Doll display.
Smaller versions have 5 strings with 5 dolls each and only one ball.

Little girls in bright kimono ride on river boats for their first festival, while the reflections of sagemon (hanging ornaments unique to the Yanagawa region) glimmer on the river. Enjoy this colorful girls' festival and its Japanese atmosphere.
Sagemon are displayed until April 3.

Tsurushibina from Inatori, Shizuoka, since the Edo period
江戸時代の稲取つるし雛

During the Edo period, the fishermen of Inatori were very poor and could not buy expensive hina doll displays for their girls. So the mothers used their old clothes and made small dolls
There are 5 strings with 11 dolls each, two forming a set for each side.

kasafuku 傘福 - "umbrella for good luck"
From Sakata town 酒田地区

They have been introduced in the Edo period along with the sea traffic to Hokkaido.

A special cloth is fixed inside the umbrella and the dolls hung from it.

The craft of making kasafuku, unique to Yamagata Prefecture, is a dying species like so many other traditional crafts in Japan. Such hanging ornaments have been part of Japan's traditional culture since the Edo Era.

Asakusa Kannon 浅草観音 and temple 浅草寺 Senso-Ji, Asakusadera .

Around the year 1802, a country bump came to Edo for sightseeing. After visiting the Asakusa Kannon he then was on his way back home. On the bank of the river he met a very drunk man who attacked him and killed him . . . at least the man lost his conscience and fell to the ground. When he came back to his senses, he felt for the amulet of the Asakusa Kannon, which he had placed into his breast pocket. The imprint of Kannon had disappeared from the paper. 
Now he knew that Kannon had taken his place and saved his life.

Kannon 観音 / Kanzeon 観世音

享和年中、ある田舎人が東京見物に来て、浅草観世音に詣でるなどして過ごした後帰路に着いたところ、土手で泥酔した狂人に斬られた。本人もそう思い失神した。その後、息を吹き返した彼は、懐にしまってあった浅草観世音の影像を見ると、紙に刷ってあった御影が切れていた。これは観世音が身代わりとなったと思われた。

推古天皇の時代に土師臣中知という人が浅草の地に流れ着き、家臣の檜熊濱成、武成の二人の兄弟とともに漁労を生業としていた。推古天皇の御代の36年3月18日の朝、浅草の沖で網を下ろしていると観音大士の像のみが網にかかった。場所を変えても同じで、驚いてこれを持ち帰り家に安置したが、臭魚の穢に混ざることを恐れて香道を作って安置した。これが浅草観音の縁起という。

姥ヶ池というところに一軒の家があり、母子が住んでいた。母子は旅人を泊めて殺しては衣裳をはいでいた。浅草観音の力でそのことを妨げられ、母が娘を誤って殺した。その後母は大蛇と化したが供養により守りの神となった。
姥ヶ池というところに一軒の家があり、姥とその娘が住んでいた。姥は旅人を泊めて殺しては衣裳をはいでいた。ある日浅草観音が笛を吹いて、旅人に危険を知らせ、旅人は助かった。また、浅草観音は姥が地獄に落ちるのを憐れんで、児の姿で姥を訪ね、姥は児と誤って娘を殺してしまった。その後母は池に身を投げて大蛇となったが、神にして祝ってその悪霊をなだめると守りの神となって、諸々の病をしりぞけるようになった。大蛇と化したが供養により守りの神となった。

henjoo nanji 変成男子

文政2年4月に、神田和泉橋通りに住む善八は、旅の途中に娘が目の前で気絶した。善八が介抱すると目を覚まし、誘拐されて逃げてきたという。善八が彼女を送り帰したところ、恩を忘れぬようにと善八の所持品を所望したので、浅草観世音の御影を与えた。善八が江戸に帰ると妻が出産していたが、子の手にはかの御影が握られていた。聞くと先の娘はそれ以前に病死していたという。観音の慈悲によって男子に生まれた変わったのだろう。

Jikaku Daishi 慈覚大師

慈覚大師が東方を行脚していた時に浅草寺でしばし逗留した。ある日白髪の翁がやって来て、東北に霊地があって、私はそこに霊像を安置した。その像は伝教大師が作ったものだと言い終わると姿を消したという。そこで慈覚大師が東北に向かったところ突然瑞雲が立ち、青竜が雲から現れた。庵に入り、仏像を拝んだ。慈覚大師は青竜に対して、ここに寺を造るので加護してほしいと告げる。それを聞いた青竜は姿を消した。その後は時々竜燈の奇瑞が起きるという。

宝暦の末に、浅草寺のほとりにありがた坊と呼ばれた僧がいた。本名は楽心といい、つんぼであった。ある時、地蔵堂の常念仏の役を務めたが、その夜に地蔵尊が「楽心、楽心」と呼ぶ声が初めて聞こえ、また「ありがとうござります」と初めて話したという。それ以来耳も聞こえて、言葉も話せるようになったという。

浅草仲見世 Asakusa Nakamise

明治10年頃、浅草仲見世の大橋某という家に、約半年に渡って毎夜怪異が続いた。何の祟りか判然としなかったが、その昔、大橋家の先祖がDenbo-In 伝法院の寺侍だった頃、浅草寺内の竹薮を切り開いたことへの祟りとの噂が高かった。そのため伝法院でこの怪異を封じて庭内に鎮護大神として一社を祀った。後に災難除けとして金属製の狸の像を授与することになった。

. Kappa legends from Kyushu 河童 九州 .
When people crossed the wide rivers of Buzen, they often met a Kappa who wanted to do Sumo wrestling. Among the retainers of 小笠原信濃守 Lord Ogawawara from Shinano there was a strong man named 大つか庄右衛門 Otsuka Shoemon , who tried a bout with Kappa. But Kappa moves very fast and his body was slippery like an eel. He has spikes like needles on his body and Shoemon was hurt all over. He fell ill after the bout.
Another story tells about Shoemon and his friend せ川藤吉 Segawa Tokichi. When they walked into the river and the Kappa appeared, Tokichi drew his sword and killed the Kappa. The Kappa was small like a child, had a whitish skin and sharp nails like a cat.

At the waterfall 千丈が滝 Senjogataki there is 観音堂 a Hall for Kannon Bosatsu.
When 大塚庄右衛門 Ozauk Shoemon and his dumb friend went to the bridge above it to cool down in summer, there is a catfish jumping up and churning the water. Almost like going to heaven, it soon begun to rain. So it must have been a ryuu 竜 dragon after all.

munagi むなぎ dialect for unagi, eel
At the waterfall 千丈が滝 Senjogataki in Buzen there lives a special Munagi eel in the river.
Its ears are large like a handfan and he is crawling in the riverbed. Its stomach is almost golden. It is about 24 m long, they say.

. kishin, kijin, onigami 鬼神の伝説　Oni Deity Demon Legends .
During the time of emperor 継体天皇 Keitai Tenno (?450 - ?531) there lived kijin 鬼神 a Demon Deity on 求菩提山 Mount Kuboteyama in 豊前国上毛郡 the district Koge who played many bad tricks on the villagers. Through the power of the venerable 卜仙 Bokusen he was exorcised and put into a bottle, which was buried on the top of the mountain.
Its soul in now worshiped here.

In the 築城郡 Tsuiki district of Bungo there lived a farmer. His son 才次郎 Saijiro, who was 8 years old, was only 53 cm high. He was a decent boy and spoke politely, never causing trouble to others.
When he was born, he was so small he could be kept in the palm of both hands.

The emperor 景行天皇 Keiko Tenno (大足彦天皇) had dispatched 菟名手（うなて）Unate (Unade), an ancestor of the Bungo regents, to Bungo, to the village 中臣村 Nakatomi.
He saw a white bird coming from the North and caught it.
The bird turned into mochi 餅 rice cakes, then into many thousand ietsuimo 芋草 plants.
So the Emperor named this area 豊国 Bungo "rich and plentiful land".

Bungo Province (豊後国, Bungo no kuni)
was a province of Japan in eastern Kyūshū in the area of Ōita Prefecture.
It was sometimes called Hōshū (豊州), with Buzen Province. Bungo bordered Buzen, Hyūga, Higo, Chikugo, and Chikuzen Provinces.

Karukaya, Japan's First Illustrated Book
"Karukaya is a so-called 'companion story' ascribed to Japan's Muromachi period, approximately 590 years ago. I see it to be Japan's oldest illustrated book. This view of course is not meant to overlook the large bulk of painted handscrolls produced in the preceding Heian and Kamakura eras (roughly 900 to 1300 AD).
However, in the genre of illustrated storybooks, Karukaya can probably be taken with relative confidence as a historic starting point (even though art historians have yet to reach a definitive conclusion on the matter)."

室町時代に描かれた絵入本
「苅萱（かるかや）」の素朴すぎる世界観よ

今回紹介するのは2013年に日本民藝館で行われた「つきしま かるかや」という展覧会で築島とともに展覧会タイトルにもなっている「苅萱（かるかや）」です。
「苅萱」は苅萱道心と名乗り修行を続ける父と、母とともに父親探しの旅に出る息子 石童丸の逸話「苅萱伝説」を描いた絵入本で、室町時代に刊行されました。
そして苅萱に描かれている絵が、築島の絵のタッチに負けず劣らずのユルさっぷりなんです。

The Muromachi period (室町時代, Muromachi jidai, also known as the Muromachi era, the Ashikaga era, or the Ashikaga period) is a division of Japanese history running from approximately 1336 to 1573. The period marks the governance of the Muromachi or Ashikaga shogunate (Muromachi bakufu or Ashikaga bakufu), which was officially established in 1338 by the first Muromachi shōgun, Ashikaga Takauji, two years after the brief Kenmu Restoration (1333–1336) of imperial rule was brought to a close. The period ended in 1573 when the 15th and last shogun of this line, Ashikaga Yoshiaki, was driven out of the capital in Kyoto by Oda Nobunaga.
From a cultural perspective,
the period can be divided into the Kitayama and Higashiyama periods (later 15th – early 16th centuries).
The early years
from 1336 to 1392 of the Muromachi period are known as the Nanboku-chō or Northern and Southern Court period. This period is marked by the continued resistance of the supporters of Emperor Go-Daigo, the emperor behind the Kenmu Restoration. The years from 1465 to the end of the Muromachi period are also known as the Sengoku period or Warring States period.

When Sai no Kami was sleeping by the roadside, one of his legs was cut off by a car and he had to live with one leg only.
Therefore as an offering for the New Year and 盆 O-Bon for the ancestors people make only one zoori 草履 straw sandal.
Sai no Kami is also seen as 風邪の神 Kaze no Kami.

鎌倉市太郎 Kamakura Ichitaro was suffering from tagori タゴリ coughing.
In his dream the wild deity Aragamisama and told him to paint a picture of niwatori 鶏 a rooster to venerate. He did as told and was soon healed.
He dedicated a banner to the deity. Members of the Kamakura family never eat chicken and most of the villagers do not do it either.

Near the bridge 河内橋 Kawachibashi there is a huge boulder with a stone sanctuary.
Once the villagers brought fuujin 風神 the Wind God from the village up here to venerate.
The deity helped calm down the local 山神 Yamanokami and also helped heal タゴリ coughing.

Genbeibuchi 源兵衛渕 the river pool of Gohei
About 20 meters downriver from 御霊屋橋 the bridge Mitamayabashi there is a river pool.
During お盆 the O-Bon season, the young men from the area gathered here to discuss catching unagi 鰻 eel when a priest came along and told them:
"You should not kill any living being during the O-Bon season!"
The priest had been to a home before and partaken of the food offerings of mugimeshi 麦飯 cooked rice with wheat.
源兵衛 Gohei thought that the priest must have been the eel master of the river pool.
They used poison to catch eels, and when one floated up, they caught it and opened its stomach. Inside was
mugimeshi 麦飯 cooked rice with wheat, which they had offered to the priest.
Genbei died of the curse of killing an eel and the area was called after him, Genbeibuchi.

The material used was mukuroji 無患子（むくろじ) soapberry fruit, suisho 水晶 chrystals, shinju 真珠 pearls or sango 珊瑚 corals.

長篠の医王寺 Temple Io-Ji at Nagashino
A plasterer was walking along a mountain pass in the evening, when suddenly he felt something heavy hanging to his back.
He was quite afraid and walked on in haste. When he saw the lights of the Io-Ji temple 医王寺, the strange load on his back became light and vanished.

The head priest of the temple 清養院 Seiyo-In suffered from ribyo 痢病 dysentery in one summer.
One evening when he went to the toilet, he knocked at the door, he heard a voice saying "Wait a moment, just wait!"
Then the cat of the temple came running out, the door opened fully and a huge cat came it. This huge cat walked around the district 納屋町 Nayamachi every night and asked the temple cat to join it. But since the temple cat had to keep company to the priest, it could not go out. The huge cat promised to give her a tenugui 手ぬぐい hand towel, but the temple cat still did not want to leave her master and asked the huge cat to go away. Now the priest gave a hand towel to his cat and told it to go where she wanted. So the cat run off and never returned.

On the road from the Southern part toward Osaka, there is a pass called 竹の打越. Nearby is the home of a poor family.
The head of the family once suffered of 痢病 the plague. He told his daughter that he would like
to eat some katsuo 鰹 / 鱣 bonito. But since the family was so poor, they could not afford to buy the fish. When the daughter went to draw some water from the river, all of a sudden a bonito was in her bucket. She thought this was a present from heaven and hurried home to prepare the fish for her father. After he had eaten it, his illness became better. Each time the daughter went drawing water, a bonito was in her bucket, until the father was completely healed.
This is a tale to show the merit of filial piety.
