Rokuhei iwa 六兵衛岩 Rokubei Rock

The beautiful young Rokubei went to お伊勢参り a pilgrimage to Ise.
He took the ferry boat, but his kasa 笠 strawhat fell into the river. When he came home from the pilgrimage, he fell ill and was about to die. The ill Rokubei got up, went out and hid in the cave of a rock, where he became known as the "Rokubei Rock".
The 竜宮の姫 princess from the Dragon Palace had liked him a lot and called him to her quarters.

Nakahira Sobei no borei 中平宗兵衛の亡霊 The ghost of Nakahira Sobei
The righteous Sobei was beheaded by the local official, but his spirit jumped on a ferry boat and only his voice was heard.
This spirit went to his parent's home and obtained three meals. His head showed up in a dream of his father.

This describes how to make 49 types of renzuru - the joining of 2 to 100 paper cranes out of one single sheet of paper.
The descriptions, however, do not actually give specific steps on how to create the various types of renzuru, but only shows how one would prepare the necessary cuts in the open origami paper before making the renzuru.

In the past, people enjoyed shadow performances at banquets and other functions, using hands and legs, or small implements to create shapes in the form of a wild goose or a cat behind a shoji sliding door. Try and imagine what it would look like behind the shoji and how the shadows would appear on the shoji.

[ 文字絵 Moji-e (picture with characters ]
Here you see characters depicting the names of occupations drawn into the pictures, forming the bodyline of the figures. You can learn about the manners and customs of venders and artisans during the Edo period. Can you see where the characters are hidden in the pictures?

[ 知恵の板 Chie-no-ita (tangram) ]
Chie-no-ita is made from a square board cut into 7 pieces. It is a puzzle game where you arrange 7 pieces to make various shapes.
How to play: You can select one of the 3 square boards to bring up the image of a completed form in the center of a page.
Drag 7 pieces around with you to match the final shape.

[ 判じ物 Hanjimono (watch and guess puzzle) ]
In the Edo period, there were many printed puzzles published to allow people to guess hidden words and meaning of pictures. This one here not only hides the place names, it also hides the title outside the frames and even the name of the printer. Can you guess the words inside the frames and the meaning of the pictures?

It lives near a well or small river and makes the noise of washing beans. Sometimes it plays tricks on humans.

The Principle of Nishiki-e
Sustainability in Japan's Edo Period--300 Years Ago!
Japan in the Edo era had technologies to make it possible to mass-produce nishiki-e, plate prints in multicolor. Nishiki-e is one of the most original art forms created by the Japanese. Nishiki-e artwork was a creative commodity for the general public. It not only nurtured the Japanese people's sensitivity to art over the centuries, but also inspired French impressionists so much that its influence is still evident in today's visual art of the world.
It was rare in those days
to have a product where so much value was added into one piece of paper that was being mass produced. However, because the whole production process required only simple materials--paper and board and painting tools--the energy consumption did not rise above the levels of solar energy obtained during the preceding few years.
We call this ability to rapidly create great value while best meeting consumer needs with only limited resources, the "Nishiki-e Principle". It is for certain this principle was the basis for leading a better-quality life while only using scarce solar energy resources.
All nishiki-e materials, except for the blades of the woodblock carving knives, were made from sustainable botanical resources. Other than the simple materials, only the detailed work of human hands is required. The Japanese paper used for Nishiki-e were made from young branches of paper mulberry matured in the preceding year or two at the most. Woodblocks were mainly made from cherry wood and craftsman fully utilized this resource, by using both sides of woodblock boards. Except in the case where one whole side was one color, one woodblock would be carved for several colors. It was typical to use only five woodblocks to print a nishiki-e in ten colors. More interestingly, professional craftsmen were hired specifically to shave used woodblock boards flat so that they could be reused over and over.
Since the technology of nishiki-e had made it possible
to print complex colors and figures easily, nishiki-e became a popular local product of the Edo town, being also called "azuma-nishiki-e" or simply, "edo-e." As many nishiki-e shops were built in several parts of Edo town in the early 19th century, the nishiki-e price fell down to an affordable 16 or 32 mon, often found in children's pocket money. ("Mon" is a monetary unit of the Edo Period. Sixteen mon is about U.S.$3-6.)
Just like today's children
collect their favorite character goods, it appears that their Japanese counterparts in the Edo era bought woodcut prints produced by their favorite artists such as Toyokuni or Kunisada (popular nishiki-e artists of the era). Those ordinary children who lived in the community flats along narrow streets were playing with picture cards created by artists who have become highly renowned and valued worldwide today.
In a matured society, some people appear to become patrons and aid creators of artwork. In Europe, such patrons were found among royalties, aristocracy or rich local magnates. In Edo Japan, plain commoners including children fulfilled the role of patrons through the purchase of their favorite nishiki-e woodcut prints with pocket change. Thanks to the invention of nishiki-e, the Japanese received many benefits-some of which they were not conscious of.
The effect of the nishiki-e principle
is seen most visibly in hand-crafted products. Today manual production may appear to be inferior to mass-production in efficiency, as no matter how experienced the artists are they can never make exactly the same item in shape or function twice. However, this apparent inefficiency in nishiki-e was in fact a huge benefit in disguise. The strongest point is that because each item is slightly different, customers could easily choose the items that struck their fancy. It is said in Japanese, "ten people, ten colors"--hand-made art is easily adapted for each person's unique tastes.

Made from the fermented juice of unripe astringent persimmons, the color comes from the tannin molecules linking together and forming a coating. More than a coloring agent, kakishibu also has strengthening, antibacterial and waterproofing properties. Kakishibu was used in China and Korea, but reached its ultimate utilization in Japan. It was used as a wood preservative, waterproofer, insect repellent, folk medicine, and on washi (Japanese paper), fans, parasols, clothing and in sake production.

The family business dated back to the Muromachi period.
藺阿弥 also grew igusa rush material. The family name Iami was given by 織田信長 Oda Nobunaga.

sanshichuu 三尸虫 / サンシチュウ the three worms

If one sleeps on the 庚申の日 Koshin Day, the 三尸 three worms come out of the human body and go to heaven.
They report to Ten no Kami 天の神 the God of Heaven about the good and bad deeds of the human, so he/she can be punished.
To prevent these worms to go to heaven, people try not to sleep on this night.
People who do not sleep will live longer.

Since Hachirotaro could not live there any more, he fled to Hachirōgata 八郎潟 Hachirogata.

Grandfather 大宅 貫一郎 Oyake Kanichiro had a zaimokuya 材木屋 lumber shop.
Tenjin Sama appeared in his dream and said "I want to go to your home!" So he went to 富山 Toyama to pick him up. He found a desolate wayside shrine with a small statue. He gave some money to the villagers and took the Deity with him. After a little while, the grandmother of Kanichiro had pain in her arm. When he looked at the statue of Tenjin, he saw that a nezumi ネズミ mouse had nibbled on his arm. He called a carpenter and had the arm repaired. Grandmother's pain was also healed.

The painter 白川芝山 Shirakawa Shizun / 白芝山 (1759 - 1850) had painted a horse on an ema 絵馬 votive tablet in the Tenjin Shrine. The horse came to life and went outside damaging the fields and eat grass. He therefore painted some grass and reins on the tablet to keep the horse in place.

At the Shrine 宝満神社 in the South of 種子島 Tanegashima island they venerate 玉依姫 Princess Tamayori Hime.
At the Shrine 浦田神社 in the North of the Island they venerate ウガヤフキアエズ尊 / 鸕鶿草葺不合尊 Ugayafukiaezu no Mikoto.

Other names: Hikonagisatake ugayafukiaezu no mikoto (Kojiki)

The son of Hohodemi (Ninigi's son) and Toyotamabime (Watatsumi's daughter);
the father of Emperor Jinmu. Ugayafukiaezu's name ("cormorant-rush-thatching-unfinished") is associated with the events of his birth; according to an "alternate writing" related by Nihongi, the name was given by his mother Toyotamabime. As an offspring of the imperial grandchild by a sea goddess, he was born within a parturition hut built beside the seashore. But his mother's labor began before the parturition hut was fully thatched with cormorant feathers, and Toyotamabime was seen in labor by Ninigi. In humiliation, Toyotamabime wrapped the newborn child in grass, and abandoned him by the seashore, where he was found and raised by Toyotamabime's sister Tamayoribime.
According to another "alternate writing" of Nihongi,
Toyotamabime could not bring herself to abandon the child, and took him up and returned with him to her palace in the sea. Since she felt it unfit that an offspring of the Heavenly Grandchild be raised within the sea, however, she gave him to her sister Tamayoribime to be taken to the land. Ugayafukiaezu later married his aunt Tamayoribime and fathered the kami Itsuse no mikoto, Inahi no mikoto, Mikenu no mikoto, and Kamuyamatoiwarebiko (Emperor Jinmu).

at the temple 光前寺 Kozen-Ji,
During the annual festival of the nearby Shrine 天神宮 Tenjingu, Tenjin Gu a young woman had to be offered.
Three monsters came to eat the woman. The priest of the Shrine found out about Hayataro and had him drive the monsters.
But then Hayato died himself and is now venerated at Kozen-Ji.

The daikan 代官 assistant deputy governor went to the Tenjin Shrine and his horse drank from the 手水鉢 basin for the ritual purification of hands.
A man who asked him to stop this was hit with his whip. After the Daikan had walked away for about 500 meters, there came a black cloud and he rushed down a slope on his horse. A lightning struck him and he and his horse fell down the valley.
This slope is now called Dakzanzaka 代官坂 "Slope of the Daikan".

Bread shaped like a mythical mermaid-like monster that folklore says repels plagues is proving popular in Japan as people hope for the end of the coronavirus outbreak.
A cafe in the city of Uruma,
Okinawa Prefecture, started selling the bread, which looks like Amabie, last month.
The bread is made from locally-sourced ingredients,
including yellow potato for the monster's long hair and beak, and red sweet potato for the body.
The cafe has closed temporarily
since early last month due to the outbreak. But orders have been pouring in from across the country after it began selling the product online.
A representative of the cafe says
she hopes the bread will make people smile and help boost their immunity so that the outbreak will end as soon as possible.
