Legends about Ryuto, "Dragon Lantern"

A phenomenon at the Ariakekai sea in Kagoshima, Kyushu, in the evening hours.
It is also seen in other parts of Japan as a light that the Dragon God sends out to honor the deities of Shinto and Buddhism in Japan.

Yakushi of the Dragon Lantern

Once upon a time
the fishermen of Masaki went out to the sea for fishing, when the weather suddenly turned bad. They tried to get back to land as fast as they could, but the strong wind and currents drifted the boat further out to sea. The fishermen rowed the boat with all their might, but eventually lost all their strength and just sang the Amida prayer:
「南無阿弥陀仏。南無阿弥陀仏。」 Namu Amida Butsu, Namu Amida Butsu.

Suddenly they saw a light on the horizon, and then one more, and one more. They rowed the boat toward that light in hope for help. The three lights kept flickering as if they wanted to encourage the fishermen to do their best. This light came, in fact, from a pine tree in the compound of the temple.

ryuutoo no matsu 龍灯のマツ the Dragon Lamp Pine

The fishermen rowed faster and faster to reach this light and finally came to the beach.
"Thanks to the Buddha from temple Konren-Ji. Let us give thanks and pray!"
The fishermen stood in front of the pine and looked up to see the light again, but now all was dark.

"This must have been a dragon dancing and thus bringing light to the sea of Masaki!"

Eventually years later in a storm this pine tree broke down, but before it died, the fishermen took a branch and planted it anew. And to their surprize the new tree had three main stems. Thus they understood that this pine tree was the dancing dragon.
The tree we can see now is a much later generation.

mon 門 the 36 gates of Edo castle

- quote
The 36 Gates of Edo Castle
Edo (Yedo) Castle, constructed in 1457, transformed Tokyo (then called Edo) from a small fishing village into an urban center for trade, culture, and politics. Edo Castle became the official residence of the Tokugawa shogun who ruled Japan from 1603 to 1867. Upon the shogun's arrival in 1603, the castle was in shambles, requiring an extensive 40 year reconstruction project. The castle was upgraded to be an appropriate residence for the shogun as well as an administration center for a unified Japan.
At the time, it was the biggest castle in the world with a defensive perimeter of over 10 miles comprised of an inner and outer moat. The moats were crossed by 36 gates or watchtowers, each heavily guarded. In 1868 the Tokugawa shogun's power toppled and the emperor was restored to the supreme ruling position, ending the feudal era and ushering the modernization of Japan. Emperor Meiji resided at the castle from 1868 to 1888 before moving to the newly constructed Imperial Palace. Unfortunately, there is little that remains of the original castle structure today. Much of it had been destroyed due to fires and earthquakes, including most of the gates. The remnants are currently being preserved as historical landmarks.

This extravagant publication at the end of the 19th century tried to capture the magnificence of the gates for tourists and historians alike. Each of the 36 gates is depicted in color with an accompanying historical description.
- source : blogs.harvard.edu/preserving...

- quote -
Gates
The inner citadels of the castle were protected by multiple large and small wooden gates (mon), constructed in-between the gaps of the stone wall.
Not many are left today. From south to southwest to north, the main gates are at Nijūbashi, Sakurada-mon, Sakashita-mon, Kikyō-mon, Hanzō-mon, Inui-mon, Ōte-mon, Hirakawa-mon and Kitahanebashi-mon.
Only the stone foundations of the other gates (meaning the gap left in between the large stone walls for the wooden gates) are still preserved. Large gates, such as the Ōte-mon, had a guard of 120 men, while the smaller gates were guarded by 30 to 70 armed men.

An eye-witness account
is given by the French director François Caron from the Dutch colony at Dejima. He described the gates and courts being laid out in such a manner as to confuse an outsider. Caron noted the gates were not placed in a straight line, but were staggered, forcing a person to make a 90 degree turn to pass on to the next gate. This style of construction for the main gates is called masugata (meaning "square"). As noted by Caron, the gate consisted of a square-shaped courtyard or enclosure and a two story gatehouse which is entered via three roofed kōrai-mon. The watari-yagura-mon was constructed at adjacent angles to each side within the gate.
All major gates had large timbers that framed the main entry point and were constructed to impress and proclaim the might of the shogunate.

The Hanzō-mon (半蔵門) Hanzomon is a gate in the kōrai style. The old gate was destroyed by fire during World War II. The Wadakura Gate was moved here in its stead. The Hanzō-mon is the only gate to the Fukiage area from outside today.

The Inui-mon (乾門) was in the Nishinomaru area next to today's headquarters of the Imperial Household Agency and called Nishinomaru Ura-mon. It was moved to its present location between the Kitanomaru and Fukiage garden in the Meiji era. It has its name because it was in the northwestern part of the Imperial Palace grounds.

Kikyō-mon 桔梗門 Kikyo-Mon
One of the few gates left of the Ninomaru is the kikyō-mon, which is also known as the Inner Sakurada-mon, as opposed to the (Outer) Sakurada-mon in the south. The architecture of the tower is a gate and in the kōrai style.

Kitahanebashi-mon 北桔橋門, "Northern Drawbridge Gate" is the northern gate to the Honmaru ward, facing Kitanomaru ward across Daikan-cho street. It is also constructed as a masu-gate just like Ōte-mon and Hirakawa-mon, and has a watari-yagura-mon in a left angle. The bridge in front of the gate, which was once a drawbridge during the Edo period, is now fixed to the ground. The metal clasps used to draw the bridge are still attached to the roof of the gate.

Sakashita-mon 坂下門  originally faced the north, but was changed to face the east in the Meiji era. This tower gate overlooks Hamaguri-bori. The assassination of Andō Nobumasa, a member of the shōgun's Council of Elders, occurred outside this gate.

Atago shrine in Tokyo
1-5-3 / Minato ward, Shiba, Atago

It was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1603 to prevent fires in the city. The shrine is on a small mountain of only 26 meters hight, but it could overlook most of the new Edo city and thus help prevent fires.
The very steep stairs leading to the shrine are also famous, as they represent success in life.
According to legend,
Magaki Heikuro, dared to ride his horse up the stairs to deliver plum blossoms to the shogun Iemitsu. It took his horse only one minute to get up, but 45 minutes to get down, and the horse was totally exhausted afterwards. The samurai got a great reward and was promoted to a high rank.

Many fish dealers soon came to live here too and the sound of vendors could be heard.

In the South-West of Suginami ward.

The river 松庵川 Shoangawa used to pass through the village. Now it is put under ground.

The wilderness was developed for farming in the Edo period by
He died in 1665.
He was probably also the head priest of the temple 円光寺 Enko-Ji.
The region was first called Shoan Shinden. Around 1716, it was named Shoan Mura.
In 1889, it became 高井戸村 Takaido mura.
In 1932, it was divided into North Shoan 松庵北町 and South Shoan 松庵南町.
In 1969, the first and second sub-district of Takaido were finally named Shoan first to third sub-district.

Nishi-Takai Shoan Inari Jinja

- Deity in residence
Ukemochi no Mikoto

It was a shrine in the precincts of temple Enko-Ji, where Ogino Shoan was active.
Shoan is venerated in this shrine as protector deity of the area. His grave is in the North of the Shrine, where the temple Enko-Ji used to be before shrine and temple had to be separated in the Meiji period.
There are two memorial towers in the precinct, one with the inscription

To the left of the torii 鳥居 entrance gate there is another small shrine venerating 狐のミイラ the mummy of a fox.

On an artificial hill beside the temple Enko-Ji there was a hole where a mother fox brought up her children.
When the temple had to be removed, the hill was also destroyed and the foxes had to go. Mother fox was so frustrated and sad, she bit off her front legs and died under the veranda of the temple.
The mummy shows a mother fox with her mouth biting the front legs. But it is not shown any more. There are countless small statues of the Inari fox in front of the sanctuary.

It used to prevent people from passing this slope. When a person stopped walking, the Yakan also stopped walking. Then the Yakan would stand up on its hind legs and dance.
The Yakan was often seen on rainy nights.

EDO - Koami district

https://wkdhaikutopics.blogspot.com/2009/12/nihonbashi.html

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Koamichoo 小網町 Koami district,
"small net"

Chuo ward, Nihonbashi

Now a busy shopping center, in the Edo period a fishing district.

- quote -
The town name of Koamicho is said to have derived from the fact that fishermen who pulled the nets and submitted their catches to the shogun for inspection were ordered to present white fish. These privileged fishermen had a custom of hanging their nets to dry on a street corner of 1-Chome. These fishermen were likely there at around the early Edo period. Since then, this area developed as a main spot for water transport due to the nature of the locality of the Nihonbashi River.
It is said that the prices of land in Nihonbashi Koamicho and Nihonbashi Kodenmacho were high in Edo.

EDO - Senzoku district

https://edoflourishing.blogspot.jp/2017/07/taito-ward.html

..............................................................................................................................................

Senzoku 千束 Senzoku district "1000 measures"
Taito ward 台東区 千束, in the Shitaya area

The name Senzoku is very old. The area was near Asakusa Tenno-Cho, reaching all the way to 千住 Senju.
One explanation of this name "1000 measures of rice" say the area was near the 浅草寺 Asakusa Temple Sensō-Ji and had to provide kuyoo 供養 food offerings (rice) for the 1000 priests and monks of the famous temple district:
senzoku 千僧供 food offerings for 1000 monks.
But this explanation is most probably wrong.
soku (zoku) 束 was a measurement for the amount of 穎稲 rice before the harvest, 1束 - 稲10把
This would suggest that on the fields of the temple, they harvested 1000 soku of rice.

EDO - Sunamura district

- Sunamura 砂村 "Sand village" district
It has four sub-districts, North, East, South and New : 北砂 Kitasuna、東砂 Higashisuna, 南砂 Minamisuna and 新砂 Shinsuna -
Since 1889 known as 砂町 Sunamachi, combined with other small districts nearby.
Sunamachi Ginza Shopping District -located at Kitasuna

The district is named after its developer,砂村新四郎 Sunamura Shinshiro, the brother of
Sunamura Shinzaemon (1601 – 1668).

He moved to Edo from Kanagawa and was tasked with developing a large sandbank. The 13 fields he could create gave reason for the name, Shinden 新田 "New Fields"

Mizote Masanori

....................................................................................................................................................
Before Tokugawa Ieyasu moved to Edo, the Hachiman shrine in this area was located a bit further to the east, in Sunamura. The tiny village of Sunamura is located on a patch of high ground in the midst of the marshes, about five kilometers east of Edo. It is one of the oldest settlements in the area, but remains fairly rural and isolated due to the surrounding marshes. ...
Although many of the visitors to Tomioka Hachiman Jinja and Sanju-San Gendo are samurai, the Fukagawa neighborhood is mainly home to blue-collar workers who work in various parts of Edo.

Fuyukiya 冬木屋 was a lumber merchant. The first Fuyuki had come from Gunma. His name was 上田直次 Ueno Naoji. The third owner was 冬木屋弥平次 Fuyukiya Yaheiji, who established a large lumber yard here.
In 1705 Fuyukiya Yaheiji became the head man of district, which was then named after him.

Ogata Korin (1658–1716) left from Kyoto for Edo (now Tokyo) in 1704. The first people with whom Korin lived in Edo were the Fuyuki family, who were lumber dealers in Fukagawa. This garment is said to have been created for Mrs. Fuyuki as a token of his appreciation for the hospitality he had received.
At the time, kosode garments painted by famous artists on special orders were in fashion among women in affluent merchant families.
