ryuutoo kannon 竜頭観音 Kannon with a Dragon Head
奥田字日沢の地、１アール程の林に囲まれた静かな田んぼのほとりに粗末な社と小屋があってのぼりが多くたっている。その小屋に竜頭観音の額と由来をしるしたものがある。神代国造りの時、美津波能女之命が竜に乗って天より下り少彦名命の病気を治した。その場所に水が湧き、後に病で苦しむ人皇20代允恭天にもその御神水は効果があり病気が全快された。今も万病に効くが特に婦人病によいとされ水を瓶につめて持ち帰る信者が多い。

At 竜光山 mount Ryoko-Ji there lived ryuujin 竜神 a Dragon Deity who made rain fall.
竜光山に住んでいた竜神の霊力によって雨を降らせる。竜頭の三匹獅子が腰鼓を打ち鳴らして舞うと、仲間が呼んでいると錯覚して竜が出現天に昇る。そのとき、雷鳴が轟き、にわかに曇り、雨が降るのだという。

葬式の行列には、必ずりゅうたつという木彫りの竜頭を5尺ほどの棒の先につけたものを加える。死体を山犬や、かしゃという魔物にうばわれるのを防ぐためである。

九州では不知火は竜灯だという。宮崎県西都市の銀鏡（しろみ）神楽の祭壇には、ワラ綱のとぐろをすえて、その中心に木製竜頭をつけたものが左右に置いてある。銀鏡神社の上の山は竜房山と呼ばれ、山頂に竜神が棲むと伝えられている。これは雨乞いの神としての竜神で、八大竜王系の竜神であると考えられる。

国分寺の梵鐘が須川湖に沈んで以来，旱魃の時にも須川湖の水だけは涸れることがなく，万一鐘の竜頭が水面に出るくらい水が減ると，その竜が雲を呼んでたちまち雨を降らせるという。

貝ヶ平山（カネヒラ山ともいう）に柴刈りに行った人が、山腹でオーンオーンと鳴く音を聞いた。近寄ると大きな鐘が岩に食い込んでいたので、クズワ藤で竜頭を縛って人を呼んだが、戻ってみると鐘は抜け出た後だった。鐘は大阪湾まで流れていき、今は堺の浦のハトヶ浜の海中にあって、旧暦3月節供のときに竜頭が見えるという。鐘の抜け跡はいまだある。

When the mountain hag wanted to make Ryutozan (others say 富士山 Mount Fujisan) she carried earth from 倉木山 Kurakiyama.
On her way she heard the sound of someone grinding a mortar and thought it was already morning.
She left her pot with the earth, which became 浅間山 Mount Asamayama.

天徳年間、久良畿山に山姥がいて、3人の息子はそれぞれ竜頭嶺、戸口村神沢、山住奥院の主になった。山姥は退治されて秋葉山に去った。毎年彼岸の日に山姥を祭る。秋葉山には山姥の遺跡がある。

山姥は和泉または福沢に住み、里に来て子守りをしたり、藤の皮で布を織ったりした。子守りしていた福沢日向の子を食べ、村人に焼石を食わされて天竜川に逃げ、秋葉山に住んだという。また、三人の子供がおり、長男は竜頭山、次男は三ツ森山神ヶ沢、三男は常光寺山の主であった。

Nankatsu Henro 南葛八十八ヶ所霊場 Pilgrimage in South Katsushika
南葛八十八箇所 - since 1919

葛飾 Katsushika Pilgrimages
葛飾区内に霊場がある写し霊場のうち、弘法大師に由来しているものには、東葛西領八十八箇所・荒川邊八十八箇所・新四国四箇領八十八箇所・荒綾八十八箇所・南葛新四国八十八箇所（弘山講）・南葛八十八箇所（大心講）・隅田川二十一箇所・水元水郷二十一箇所などがある。
　このうち東葛西領八十八箇所は天明年間（1781〜1789）に活動が始められた注釈1-1と推定されており、文久２（1862）年に遊々山人が著した『東葛西領新八十八箇所詣ひとり案内』に巡拝した村名と順路が記されている。 　荒川邊八十八箇所は文化年間（1804〜1818）に始まった。この「荒川」とは現在の隅田川のことである。
　新四国四箇領八十八箇所は天保12（1841）年に始まった。中川両岸沿いにある江戸時代の葛西領、二郷半領、淵江領、八条領の４ヶ領にわたる。
　荒綾八十八箇所は明治44（1911）年、荒川二十一箇所と綾瀬二十一箇所をもとにして始まった。
　南葛新四国八十八箇所は、明治43（1910）年、弘山講によって始められた。
　南葛八十八箇所は、大正12（1923）年、現在の奥戸、善紹寺の住職により始められた「いろは大師」をもとに大正14（1925）年、八十八ヶ所の霊場が整備された。

神奈川県横浜市緑区鴨居 2-4-1 / Kanagawa, Yokohama city, Midori ward, Kamoi

The temple is located on the top of a long slope.
The temple was founded in 1449 by priest 義慶 Yoshinori.
In 1563, the temple received more land from 徳川家光 the Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu.
In 1567, it was revitalized by priest 誓順 Junsei.
During fires in 1818 and 1894 the main hall was lost.
The temple was moved here around 1900 as the Fudo Hall from temple 鴨居山林光寺 Kamoizan Rinko-Ji.
In 1984, the other halls like the 薬師堂 Yakushi Do in the compound were combined under the name Saiko-Ji.
The temple has a very large graveyard and many cherry blossoms.

The statue of Fudo Myo-O at Rinko-Ji has been carved by Kobo Daishi Kukai.

sugi no seirei 杉の精霊
西光寺に大きな牛をも隠すほどの3本の大杉があった。文化2年頃、この寺の坊さんがこの木を切らせることにした。その前日の暮れ方に見たこともない怪しげな童が3人、手を取り合って泣きながら走り去ったのを見たという人がいた。また、乞食夫婦がこの木の下に宿を取ったところ、夜中に冷たい風で目が覚めた。すると裃を着けた立派な若者が左右に美しい女の人を連れて寂しそうに立っていた。何を聞いても答えないので恐ろしくなり、着物を被って突っ伏して、暫くして顔を上げたら消えていた。夜が開け、村一番の早起きにこの話をすると、千年以上の古木を切ろうとしているから杉の精霊が悲しんでいるのだろうと、他の村人たちと金を集めて木を買い取り、切るのを中止させた。木に斧を入れ始めていた樵が言うには、老木は切ると必ず水を発するものだが、この木は一度斧をあてると水が2メートルも噴出したといって気を失った。そしてこの木を切ることに賛同した6人も次々に死んだ。切られた日が4月4日だったので、この後4月4日にお祭りをしている。

夜遅く、西光寺の側にある一本の榧の木に下で坊主に見える男が算盤を弾ているという。それを算盤坊主と言い、狸の仕業とも言われるが、かつてこの寺の小坊主が算盤の事で和尚に怒られ、その木で首を吊って死んだともいわれる。

Sugoroku for Success in the First Sale of the New Year
(Hatsuakinai Shusse Sugoroku 初商出世双六)
by Kosanba and painted by Utagawa Kuniteru 1854
This is a Sugoroku (a Japanese boardgame similar to western Snakes and Ladders) of the lineup of products sold at the cosmetics store founded by a popular novelist, 式亭三馬 Shikitei Sanba and was succeeded by his son, 小三馬 Kosanba. The prices are also displayed.
The Seven Gods of Good Fortune are depicted on this Sugoroku, and thus, this work is assumed to be a New Year's gift distributed as a form of advertisment.
Shikitei Sanba is famous as the author of "Ukiyo-buro" and "Ukiyo-doko", which are representative of the comic novels that were popular in the late Edo period. He opened a fancy goods store that deal in cosmetics in Nihonbashi and brought prosperity to his business.
In his own novel, Sanba cleverly incorporated advertising by writing a story in which a character in the novel became beautiful by using the products sold at Sanba's store. In particular, "Edo no Mizu (Water of Edo)" sold well, and it can be found on the extreme right at the top of the sugoroku (Japanese board game similar to western Snakes and Ladders) introduced here.

. hebi 蛇と伝説 Legends about snakes and serpents .
二宮久太夫 Ninomiya Kyudayu was looking for a lodging in Miyagi (former 日向国 Hyuga no Kuni) and one family let them in.
But the head of the house was ill. There were his two daughters, with serpents wrapped around their neck playing 双六 Sugoroku.
The head of the house explained that the two were possessed, and if one would fear the serpent, the animal would strangle it. If both would fear the serpent, they would both be strangled.
Kyudayu left the home next morning saying thanks. When he came back a few days later, the house was gone and there was only a riverpool.
The other villagers told him that there had been an earthquake and flooding and the home was destroyed.

Sanbaso is an auspicious dance, often performed during the New Year season.
It started in the ninth century as a dance to avoid earthquakes.
It is also performed during wedding ceremonies or other auspicious events. At the beginning of a puppet theater evening, it starts the program.

zashiki oboko 座敷おぼこ / zashiki warashi 座敷わらし girl spooks
This spook apears often in old, lonely houses. It does not show on bright days, but when the weather is bad.
One home owner claims to have peeked at it. It is a rather small girl and looks like 三番叟 a Sanbaso dancer making a sound stepping on the floor.

Half way up the mountain is a cave called 吉三郎の穴 Kichisaburo no ana. Kichisaburo from 海名野 Eino village used to stay there over night when he was out making charcoal. Once O-Nyudo came and asked him to have 相撲 a bout of Sumo wrestling. Kichisaburo became quite afraid, placed a straw doll in the cave and rushed back downhill. When he came back next morning, the straw doll was all in tatters. He threw the straw into the river where it flowed down to Eino. There he picked it up, built a small sanctuary and held rituals.
This was the beginning of 海名野の人形三番叟 the Ningyo Sanbaso from Eino.

. Yamaotoko 山男と伝説 Legends about the "Mountain Man" .
Upstream of the river 仁科川 Nishinagawa where was a man making charcoal. When he took a break to eat his food, a yamaotoko 山男 "mountain man" appeared and stretched out his huge hand asking for food. The man placed some steaming-hot rice on the hand and the mountain man run away in great pain.
After that the mountain man became crazy, lost his mind and jumped into the river to his death.
In memory of this event the villagers perform 人形三番叟 a ningyo Sanbaso.

Sometimes villgers hear the sound of someone cutting trees in the mountain forest deep in a dark night.
Deep in the mountain lived a farmer who planted millet.
Once 三番叟 a Sanbaso dancer passed by and asked to stay over night. At night the farmer could hear someone dancing to the sound of a bell.
But next morning he realized that nobody had stayed over night.
A Tanuki must have bewitched him !

Around 1730, off the island 厳島 Itsukushima, there appeared 蓬莱山 Mound Horaisan in the sea.
It looked like many golden folding screens and shimmered in five colors.
Even a government official came to have a look.

春の日は 東光山に かがやきて 駒込の里に 晴るるうす雲

The main statue is 阿弥陀如来 Amida Nyorai.

The temple was founded in 1621, burned down at the great fire of Meireki and was relocated here.
In the compound are remains of the shooting grounds of 太田道灌 Ota Dokan.
The founder is 蜂屋九郎次郎善遠 of 本郷弓町 Hongo Yumicho.
The temple bell in the bell tower was the best in Komagome, but during WWII it was lost to fire.
In 1952, the main hall was rebuilt and the statue of the eleven-headed Kannon was obtained from the temple 悟真寺 Goshin-Ji in 鈴鹿市白子本町 Suzuka city.

nishin 鰊，kane no oto 鐘の音
鰊は蝦夷の物産であった。シーズンになると、祈祷に出かけて漁の成功を祈った。特に2月中旬からは、寺の鐘を打ってはならないことになった。もし鐘の響きが海底に伝わると、恐れた鰊が近寄らなくなるからだと言われていた。鯨や狐、蚫などという言葉も、鰊の敵なので、絶対口にしてはならなかった。

This shrine is located in the 志摩郡 Shima district in the village of 大王町 Daio.
In its compound there are special stones.

which is said to have been found in the stomach of a whale.

Shofukuji 正福寺 Temple Shofuku-Ji
The history of the Shima region is recorded in 志州天朗峰福寺縁起, kept at the temple Shofuku-Ji.
Once a statue of 十一面観音像 Kannon Bosatsu with 11 faces came riding on kujira 鯨魚 a whale.
She became the portector deity of fishermen and sailors.

There is a legend from a shipwrecked boat, that was rescued by a large whale fish and brought to this shore safely. Now small boats are made as amulets for safe fishing.
Many have a flag in the center as amulat for tairyoo 大漁 a "big catch" .

A pregnant kujira 鯨 whale had been swept on the beach.
The villagers held a special kuyoo 供養 memorial service for the animals, buried the baby whale in the compound and placed sekihi 石碑 a memorial stone on it.
