- quote -
From Edo to today--why not take a trip through the course of time?
Kawagoe, a key location in the north of Edo (former name of Tokyo), developed as a castle town of the Kawagoe clan.
Connected to Edo by the Shingashigawa River and the Kawagoe Kaido Road, people and cargo continuously came and went, and the entire town bustled with a spirit of enthusiasm. Thus Kawagoe had deep financial and cultural connections to Edo, which led to it being called by the endearing name 小江戸Koedo, meaning "a little Edo".
Even into the Meiji Period, it was the premier merchant city of Saitama Prefecture, and it flourished as a logistic hub for grain and was known for the production of fabrics such as Tozan (pinstriped cotton fabric).
It is said, "There are many little Tokyo's in the world but Kawagoe is the only Koedo".
However, the vestiges of Edo are not the only things which remain in Kawagoe. Following the war, the center of the prefecture became Saitama City which meant there was no large-scale development and the streets of the Edo Period (1600~1867), Meiji Period(1868~1912), Taisho Period (1912~1926), and Showa Period (1926~1989) are left behind like the tracks of time.
In Kawagoe you'll see merchant houses, which carry the feeling of Edo, the Western modernization with the romantic aroma of Taisho, the elegance remaining in the downtown Showa alleys, and the new Kawagoe lined with department stores and station buildings. Taking a walk through Kawagoe lets you meet Japan from various time periods.
30 minutes from Tokyo by train. You'll be able to see the traditional and authentic side of Japan in Kawagoe which can't be seen in Tokyo.

Arima Kaido Highway Hyogo

https://darumapilgrim.blogspot.com/2012/02/arima-tosen-shrine.html

.......................................................................

Arima kaidoo 有馬街道 Arima Kaido Highway
Built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi for his soldiers after the fight about 三木城 Miki castle (Hyogo prefecture), so they could recover in the hot springs of Arima.

. Kaido: The Ancient Highways of Japan 日本の街道 .

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Hideyoshi rebuilt Arima
Arima had prospered for a few hundred years in spite of the chaos since the Muromachi era (1336-1573) till the Sengoku era (1467-1573).
In 1528, a conflagration attacked Arima and changed it from a peaceful health resort to a wasteland after three hundred years since Ninsai's restoration.
Moreover in 1545, when the Miki castle owner Bessho with a huge army attacked Miyoshi-Souzan-Seichou whose castle was located at Ochibayama behind Zenpuku-ji(Temple), Arima was also hugely damaged. In Tenshou 4 (1576), another conflagration destroyed Arima completely before being rebuilt..

In the Edo era
Since the Edo period Arima kept its prosperity and was under the direct control of the government.

But in those days, every hotel did not have their own Spa and shared one public Spa in each town. All bathers had to go out to take a bath. The system of bathing was completely different from today's system though the Spa became more famous and more bathers visited here after Hideyoshi's bathing and reconstruction.

The bathhouse was originally seven mats long and three mats broad and the bath tub was 2 jo (about 6.06m) and 1 jo (about 3.03m) and separated in the middle to make two square bath tubs. The front side was called "Ichinoyu" and the behind side "Ninoyu" and the depth was 3 shaku and 7 -8 sun (about 30cm).

Twelve temple lodgings which Ninsai had opened were increased by twelve after Hideyoshi's construction and managed as hotels. Ten temple lodgings were in charge of Ichinoyu and Ninoyu and each lodging had two Yuna (helper for bathing). As the number of bathers increased, the number of hotels increased because temple lodgings started to have "Koyado" (Inns).

In the latter half of the Edo era (1603-1867), the people started to visit shrines, temples and Spas. Guideposts helped their travel and you can find the old guideposts in Arima Hot Springs still now.

Echigo Yoita Uchihamono 与板打刃物 Echigo Yoita cutlery
- History
The origin of Echigo Yoita Uchihamono dates back to the Warring States period. In 1578, Naoe Yamatonokami Sanetsuna, a vassal of Uesugi Kenshin, took the sword smiths from Kasugayama to Yoita. Later, since the foundations of smithing had been laid by the Naoe family, guns were also produced as well as swords. Early in the Edo period, the Yoita area was further developed and flourished by the opening up of river navigation on the Shinano river. Then, in the middle of the Edo period, carpenter's tools were added to the blacksmiths' repertoire and fine works such as doinomi or hyobunomi were created. Later, early in the Meiji period, a swordsmith, Matsunaga Ryuminsai Kaneyuki began to make planes as well as swords, which led to Yoichi achieving nationwide prominence as one of the major production areas of carpenter's tools. In 1986 Echigo Yoita Uchihamono were designated as Traditional Crafts in recognition of the area's production of fine blades and the traditional skills, which are still being passed down the generations today.
