EDO - Mogusa village

- quote -
Mogusa-mura Shōren Zenji
Shoren-ji was first built during the Tempyō era (729 to 749), and was abandoned in the Kamakura period.
During the Kyōhō era (1716 to 1735), this temple was rebuilt by the Ōkubo Family, castellans of Odawara Castle,
to pay a tribute to the memory of Tokugawa Nobuyasu, the eldest son of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Mogusa-en was a garden developed in this occasion.
In this garden, there was Shōren-an, a one-story house with a raftered roof, and
Jushō-bai, an old plum tree with a large trunk, and both of them are known as symbols of Mogusa-en.

tezumazukai 手妻使い, wazumazukai 和妻使い traditional magician

「手を稲妻の如く素早く動かす」 - te o inazuma no gotoku subayaku ugokasu
To move the hands (te) as fast as a flash of lightning (inazuma)
- quote
"Edo Tezuma" is a traditional form of Japanese magic from the Edo Period, with very few practitioners in this day and age. We were very lucky to speak to a rare practitioner of Tezuma magic, who along with his master Shintaro Fujiyama, is a resident of Suginami, Tokyo.
Taijyu Fujiyama has gone from Suginami to all around the world thanks to his magic, catching attention of people worldwide, even "Penn & Teller" in the U.S.
We spoke to Taijyu to find out more about his adventures in the world of Tezuma, and from Tezuma to the world. Our interview with Taiyu is translated into English here.
- Could you give a brief explanation about what makes it different from other magic?
- Taijyu Fujiyama:
"Tezuma" is magic conducted in Japanese style, where components of traditional dance and other classic arts are preserved in the performance. There are two important characteristics of this in Tezuma, those being "kata" and "mitate". These concepts are common among many Japanese performing arts.
"Kata" are the poses that you can often see in Kabuki and such; established movements or routines. No matter how we move, if we strike a pose the movement becomes more refined, and furthermore we can express a character. These movements help to achieve these aims.
"Mitate" is the expression of using one thing to represent another. This is common in traditional Japanese dance, for example, such as when a sensu folding fan would be used to express various things like a flute or a sword.

Nakano-no-Tō 中野塔 Nakano no To Tower
The tower of Nakano was a three-storied pagoda which was said to have been
donated by 飯塚惣兵衛 Iizuka Sōbei during 寛永年間 the Kan'ei era (1624 -1643)
and was one of Edo's famous places along with the five-storied pagoda located in Kan'ei-ji Temple, Ueno.
It was located on the grounds of 宝仙寺 Hōsen-ji Temple, Chūō, Nakano Ward,

MINGEI - Hachijojima Silk Fabric

https://omamorifromjapan.blogspot.com/2019/02/tsumugi-silk-pongee-weaving.html

- quote -
Honba Kihachijo 本場黄八丈 (Hachijojima Silk Fabric)
Traditional Technologies and Techniques
1 - Honba Kihachijo (Hachijojima silk fabric) is both a flat woven and twill woven fabric produced using threads that are dyed prior to weaving.
2 - To drive the weft threads through the weave, a shuttle is used.
3 - Dyeing of threads is carried out by hand. When dyeing is conducted, plant-derived dyes are used. The yellow color is produced from kobunagusa (scientific name: Arthraxon hispidus Mak.). The orange color is produced from a species of laurel (Machilus thunbergii). The black color is produced from a species of beech (Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii). The mordant used is comprised of wood ash and mud.
Traditionally Used Raw Materialst
Pongee thread derived from raw silk, doupion silk and floss silk; or silk thread with similar properties to these classifications.
History and Characteristics
The birthplace of the silk woven fabrics called "Kihachijo," which are known for being dyed using plant-derived materials, is located approximately 300 kilometers south of Tokyo.
On Hachijojima (Hachijo Island), which arises from the surrounding deep blue waters, cute "daughters of the island" offer calls of "welcome" to island visitors as soon as they arrive at New Year or at festival times. All over the island, tropical plants such as palms, hibiscus and other flowers add color throughout the year.
Long ago, the island was known as "the island that not even birds visit," it being a solitary and remote outcrop arising from the sea. It also played host to a harsh natural environment. However, human ingenuity allowed for the discovery of the unique colors of Kihachijo fabrics. By using the natural plant dyes necessary to produce yellows, oranges and blacks, the island's specialty "Honba Kihachijo" silk fabrics were born.
It is said that Kihachijo's uniqueness lies in both its "dyes" and "weave," these qualities being born of the island's environment. The three core colors are yellow, orange and black, all of them being natural dyes derived from plant-based materials native to the island.
"Hachijo Kariyasu" (or kobunagusa) (scientific name: Arthraxon hispidus Mak.) is used to dye yellows.
The bark of a species of laurel called Madami (Machilus thunbergii) is used to dye the browns.
The bark of the "Shiinoki," a species of beech (Castanopsis cuspidata) is used for black colors
along with mud dyeing in a process unique to the island.
Striped fabrics along with checks are woven by hand by combining these three colors together.
One of the features of Kihachijo is that it retains its colors even after many years.
Indeed, the more it is washed the more vivid the colors become.

EDO - Uo-ichi fish markets

日本橋室町 Nihonbashi Muromachi / Murocho

日本橋室町一丁目から日本橋室町四丁目 - from the first to fourth sub-district

- quote -
Nihonbashi Fish Market 日本橋魚市 Uo-Ichi
There used to be fish markets in the present-day Nihonbashi, Muromachi 室町 (Murocho) and Honchō areas.
Seafood gathered from the sea near the shore including Edo Bay would reach the people of Edo through intermediaries such as peddlers.
The whole north bank area of Nihonbashi River from Nihonbashi bridge to Edobashi bridge such as
Honfune-chō, Anjin-chō and Nagahama-chō was known as the Nihonbashi Fish Market.
There was also salt fish wholesalers who dealt with salted and dried fish in Yokkaichi-chō of the south bank and a fish market called the "New Market" in Honzaimoku-chō.
The bustle and excitement of this market was adopted in many ukiyo-e as a famous place in Edo.

reiki 霊亀 a mysterious turtle, spirit turtle, divine turtle
The spirit turtle (Chinese: 靈龜 or spirit tortoise is a turtle found in Chinese and other East Asian cultures. It is believed by East Asian cultures, like other turtles in mythology, to represent longevity (壽命).
The sangō title "Reigizan" (霊亀山 "Spirit Turtle Mountain") belongs to several temples in Japan, including Tenryū-ji and Rinsen-ji in Kyōto, Hontoku-ji in Himeji, Daichō-ji in Uwajima, and others.
It is said the Kameoka Hachimangū shrine at Sendai is so-called because a spirit turtle appeared at the time of its construction. Stone statues of the creature can be found at Zenyōmitsu-ji and Kameoka Hachimangū in Mashiko, Tochigi.

Toward the end of the Meiji period, around 1912, some workers on a maschine boat on the Tonegawa caught a 海がめ sea turtle and ate it.
That day when they finished work and wanted to go back to the harbour, the sea suddenly turned wild and the boat capsized. Only one of the workers made it back to the shore alive.
Others found him mumbeling "this turtle, this huge sea turtle . . . " and then he breathed his last too.
The fishermen of Choshi say this was the curse of the sea turtle and have great respect for this animal.
