A witch's broom or witches' broom is a deformity in a woody plant, typically a tree, where the natural structure of the plant is changed. A dense mass of shoots grows from a single point, with the resulting structure resembling a broom or a bird's nest.

Yamada Hokoku
was an educator and a vassal of the Bitchu Matsuyama Domain. As a subject of the Matsuyama Domain, Hokoku helped bring about the domain's reformation, working to repay debt totaling twice as much as the domain's revenue while leaving the same amount of accumulated wealth, all in just eight years. These efforts, including developing specialty products, improving farm tools, and promoting encouragement of new industries, always had the interest of the common people in mind.
Because he was also an educator, Hokoku encouraged common people to train both body and mind. His actions were based on the philosophies of 市民撫育　/ 士民撫育"Shiminbuiku" (which states that all things are intended for the people) and 至誠惻怛　"Shiseisokudatsu" (the spirit of cordiality and affection).
In his later years, Hokoku received a request from the government to assist his country, which he refused and instead dedicated himself to the education of children in private supplementary schools in his hometown, at the Shizutani School, and at other locations.
Yamada Hokoku served Bitchu Matsuyama Castle, one of Japan's 12 castles with a main keep that still stands today. The castle is located atop a mountain at an altitude of 430 m, making it the highest fortress in Japan with an existing main keep. Bitchu Matsuyama Castle is famously known as the "Castle in the Sky," as it appears to be floating on a sea of clouds.

Tengu sumotoriba 天狗相撲取場
On the eastern side of the 大倉ダム Okura Dam there is a steep cliff, and below it the 大倉川渓谷 Okuragawa gorge, spanned by the Tengubashi 天狗橋 Tengu-bashi, Tengu Bridge.
A Tengu has built it in just one night. At the cliff is the Shinto shrine 小倉神社 Ogura Jinja. Close by is the Sumo place of the Tengu.

On the way from 宇田津 Udatsu along 金比羅道 the road to Konpira san is a stone brigde, the Tengubashi. It is not known which stone mason built this bridge.

In Hiroshima is a bus stop named 天狗橋（広島県）on the way to Konpira san.

In the year 1688, there was the estate of the family of 本因坊 Honin-bo.

The house of Honinbo was one of the Four houses in the Edo Period in Japan.

The name of the area is connected to the name of Saruwaka (Nakamura) Kanzaburo who is said to have been the founder of Edo-style Kabuki. The area featured a number of tea houses connected to the theaters which provided visitors with guidance, food, rest and other services, and many theater proprietors and actors settled in the area, forming massive entertainment district. The district flourished until the first year of the Meiji Era, however, the theaters relocated one after another thereafter and the theater town was lost.

Saruwaka Kanzaburō　猿若勘三郎 （1598 - 1658)
the founder of Edo kabuki and first in the premier Nakamura-za lineage.
It was not until the year AD 1624 that a man named Saruwaka Kanzaburo, at the command of the Shogun, opened the first theatre in Yedo in the Nakabashi, or Middle Bridge Street, where it remained until eight years later, when it was removed to the Ningyo, or Doll Street.

Ootsuka 大塚 Otsuka "big mound"
It used to be a farming region in Koishikawa village.
The name refers to an area of flat fields, in the middle of them was a large mound, a 古墳 Kofun.
Takizawa Bakin 滝沢馬琴 (1767 - 1848) in his book about the 南総里見八犬伝 Nansō Satomi Hakkenden, the The Chronicles of the Eight Dog Heroes of the Satomi Clan of Nanso, mentions Otsuka no sato 大塚の里

The first houses of Edo city dwellers were built around 1630. In 1717 it came under the jurisdiction of the 町奉行 Machibugyo.

Jimbochō Jinbōchō 神保町 (Jinbocho)
is Tokyo's bookshop district. Like Ochanomizu it is only a station name, serving western Kanda. It is an academic neighbourhood with lots of schools and two universities (Meiji Daigaku and Nihon Daigaku) reaching as far as Ochanomizu station. The area therefore abounds with students. Jimbochō's bookshops offer everything from rare, antique books to hentai manga. Most of the shops are concentrated along the Yasukuni-dōri Avenue and are small and privately owned.
Sanseidō is the only big bookshop spreading a several floors. It is located at crossing of Yasukuni-dōri and Meiji-dōri Avenues. You will find plenty of English books (and some French and German ones too) at the 5th floor.

jinboo kooji 神保小路 Jinbo Koji, Jinbo alley
This district is named after a rich feudal lord, Jinbō Nagaharu, Jinboo Nagaharu 神保長治 Jinbo Nagaharu, who had his huge estate in the alley named after him, at the end of the 17th century.
There were two Jinbo Koji alleys, 表 Omote and 裏 Ura. Other feudal lords had their estates in this area too, but after the Meiji restauration, in 1869, they lost their land and the alley was re-named, Jinbocho.

宝亀元年4に保呂波山から夜叉鬼がきて女米鬼山に住み、里人の娘を奪い妻として、大瀧丸を生んだ。略奪を繰り返すので村民は恐れて古種沢鏡池より保量大権現を勧請し、その難を逃れようとした。現在由里群大正寺村、河辺郡女米鬼村、男鹿半島の一部に伝わる「悪魔払い」あるいは「ナモミハギ」の行事は、その難を忘無いために始まったのではないか。

Osaka has long been a great center of commerce and activity, but likely doesn't stand out as a major brewing center in the minds of most people. True, it has never been nearly as significant as its Kansai cousins — Kyoto, Hyogo and Nara — but the sake brewing culture was, and still is, strong there.

Osaka has historically been blessed with clean water and good rice. Things today are certainly not what they were hundreds of years ago, for either water or rice. But long ago water in Osaka was good all around, and tiny breweries existed (either officially or otherwise) in abundance, especially in Kawachi, Ikeda and Izumi. When Toyotomi Hideyoshi built Osaka Castle, Osaka consumerism boomed as it grew into a true castle town. Naturally enough, so did the demand for sake. Sake production in those three areas took off. At one point there were 38 sakagura (breweries) in Ikeda alone.

Hideyoshi was known to be fond of a sake called Amano-zake, brewed in a temple named Kangoji on Mount Amano. It was (and still is) brewed using koji that is much further along in its starch-to-sugar converting than koji used in normal sake. Amanozake is darker, mustier, sweeter and more tart than modern sake. One Osaka sake, which uses the brand name Amanozake, re-creates the original style in a sake they call their Amanozake Boso-shu.

shibaten シバテン / shiba tengu 柴天狗 Shiba Tengu, Shibatengu
Like a Kappa, he hangs around rivers, asks people to have a wrestling bout and begins to confuse their minds.
But he never goes into the river himself, so he is not a real Kappa.

In the village of 面河村 Omogo in the 上浮穴郡 Kamiukena district, there is a Shiba-Tengu. He is about 115 cm high and his nose is a bit smaller that that of a long-nosed Tengu. He is crazy about Sumo wrestling. If people pass along his river, he makes the sound of an ax cutting a tree and invents other deeds to scare people.
If people hear the sound of カーンカーン kaan-kaan and the falling down of a tree, they know the Shibaten is near.

In Tosa he is said to be just like a Kappa.

At the slope ヒロイアゲの坂 Hiroiage no Saka on the mountain path up to the shrine 月山神社 Tsukiyama Jinja a bald priest came out and asked for a bout of Sumo wrestling. The priest was very strong and about to win, when the villager bit him in the shoulder. Suddenly the mountain made a huge sound and the priest changed in Shiba Tengu.


高知県幡多郡大月町月ヶ丘1443 / Tsukigaoka Saitsuno, Ōtsuki-chō, Hata-gun, Kōchi

During the 白鳳時代 Hakuho period (645 - 710) 役の行者（役小角） En no Gyoja found a sacred rock in the form of a mikkazuki 三日月 new moon and prayed there.
The rock is dedicated to the Shinto deity Uganomitama 倉稲魂命 Ukano Mitama.
Later 空海 弘法大師 Kukai Kobo Daishi passed here and prayed there for 23 days and nights.
In the Meiji period, the shrine was made into a temple, named 守月山月光院南照寺, with 勢至菩薩 Seishi Bosatsu as the Buddhist deity.



The rock used to be at a place called hime no i 媛の井 / 姫ノ井 "well of the princess" and moved with supernatural powers to its present location. Thus it got more and more spiritual power and people come to pray and make wishes.

A man went to the forest with his father to do some work. After a while they took a break. Suddenly a white ball of fire came floating past, with a white tail at the end. Then they heard the sound of a terrible mountain slide, as if someone had felled a huge tree. They hurried home in great fear.
His father told him that they had been on special land where the Shiba Tengu lived and he does not like to be disturbed.

The sennin 仙人 Immortal from 金が岳 Mount Kanagatake (1,764 m) named 新左衛門 Shinzaemon
and the Tengu from 茅ヶ岳 Mount Kayagatake (1,703 m) named 江草孫右衛門 Magoemon from Egusa were on bad terms.
The Immortal jumped into the sky, made a strong wind and called the clouds. He could also take any human shape he liked. He was almost a Yokai monster Immortal.
The Immortal sometimes shape-shifted into a ball of fire to show the Tengu that he was still a novice in the field.

茅ヶ岳の天狗伝説 The Tengu legend from Mount Kayagatake.

Magoemon is a human who trained to become a Tengu, others say he is the Immortal from Mount Kayagatake.
Once he climbed the mountain to do some work, and when he came back to his home, three family generations had passed and nobody remembered him.
He was so sad, he went back to the mountain and practised 神通力 to gain divine powers.
He lived around 1520 during the times of Takeda Nobutora, the father of Takeda Shingen, in the village of Egusa.
He sometimes appeared when farmers were working in the forest and helped them cut trees. He even ate the food they shared with him.
When they gave him a leaf of tobacco, he put it on his palm and then ate it.
Time passed on in the village of Egusa. Now it is around 1715.
The woodworkers saw a huge human like a monster stand on the rocks. The beard was upside down and covered his face with white hair. His huge eyes rolled around. The villagers fled in great fear. Then there was a strong wind and black clouds showed in the sky . . . all because the villagers had disturbed Magoemon in his mountain retreat.

Mt. Kayagatake is well known for being the place where Kyuya Fukada, writer and mountaineer who published the One hundred top mountains of Japan, passed away.

He Xian Gu (何仙姑; pinyin: Hé Xiān Gū) - 何仙姑（かせんこ）Kasenko
The Immortal Woman
He Xian Gu's immortality is due to a consistent diet of powdered mother-of-pearl and moonbeams. While swallowing it, she vowed to remain a virgin.
According to a different version, He Xian Gu, daughter of a 7th-century shopkeeper, ate a magic peach and became immortal. Since than she is flying about.
She is attributed by the lotus/lotus pond, which can cultivate people through meditation.
Occasionally she is attributed with a peach, the divine fruit of Gods, associated with immortality or a music instrument or a ladle to dispense wisdom, meditation and purity.

Cao Gou Jiu (曹國舅; pinyin: Cáo Guó Jiù) - 曹国舅（そうこっきゅう）Sokokkiyu
The Royal Uncle Cao
Cao Gou Jiu is reputed to have been the brother of a 10th century Song Empress, the uncle to the Emperor of the Song Dynasty and the son of a military commander. His attribute, the castanets, are thought to be derived from the pass that gave him free access to the palace, a benefit of his rank.
He is also attributed with a jade tablet, which can purify the air.
According to another version, Cao Guo Jiu's younger brother Cao Jingzhi was a bully, but no one dared to prosecute him because of his powerful connections, not even after he killed a person. Royal Uncle Cao was so overwhelmed by sadness and shame on his brother that he resigned his office and left home.
He is represented by wearing formal court dress, always the finest dress among all Eight Immortals, and carrying castanets.
Cao Gou Jiu is the patron deity of actors.

Li Tie Guai (李鐵拐; pinyin: Lĭ Tiĕ Guăi) Li Tieguai. - 李鉄拐 / 鉄拐李（りてっかい）Ri Tekkai
Gama Sennin 蝦蟇仙人 "Toad Immortal"
The Iron-Crutch Li
Because of his great skill at magic, Li Tie Guai, was able to free his soul from his body and aid and meet others in the celestial realm. Li Tie Guai, a good looking man used his skill frequently. Once, while his spirit was gone from his body, a disciple decided that Li Tie Guai was dead and burned his body as was traditional. When Li Tie Guai's soul returned from its travels, he was forced to enter the body of a beggar.
He is represented as a lame beggar carrying a double gourd. The gourd, symbolising longevity and the ability to ward off evil, has a cloud emanating from it. The cloud represents the soul, depicted as a formless shape.
The gourd represents also helping the needy and relieve the distressed.
Sometimes Li Tie Guai is pictured riding the qilin.
Li Tie Guai is the emblem of the sick.

Lan Cai (蓝采和; pinyin: Lán Cǎihé) - 藍采和（らんさいか）Ransaika
The Immortal Hermaphrodite
Lan Cai is said to have wandered the streets as a beggar while singing a song about the brevity of mortal life. Her/his attribute is a basket of flowers associated with longevity, which she/he carries to remind viewers of the transience of life and with which she/he can communicate with gods.
She/he is variously portrayed as a youth, an aged man, or a girl; in modern pictures generally as a young boy.
She/he is represented by wearing a tattered blue gown and only one shoe.
Lan Cai is the patron deity of florists.

Lü Dongbin (呂洞賓; pinyin: Lǚ Dòngbīn) - 呂洞賓（りょどうひん）Ryodohin
The Chief leader
Lü Dongbin was an 8th-century scholar, who learned the secrets of Taoism from Zhuang Lin Quan. Dressed as a scholar, he is honoured as such. His attribute, the sword, which can subdue the evil, allowed him to travel the earth slaying dragons and fighting evil.
He is represented with a sword on his back and a fly brush in his hand.
Lü Dongbin is also the patron deity of barbers.

Han Xiang Zi (韓湘子; pinyin: Hán Xiāng Zi) - 韓湘子（かんしょうし）Kanshoshi
The Philosopher Han Xiang
Han Xiang Zi is said to have been the nephew of Han Yü, a famous scholar of the 9th century. Among his special skills was the ability to make flowers bloom instantaneously and smooth wild animals. His attribute is the flute, which can cause growth.
He is represented as a Happy Man.
Han Xiang Zi is the patron saint of musicians.

Zhang Guo Lao (張果老; pinyin: Zhāng Guǒ Lǎo) - 張果老（ちょうかろう）Chokaro
The Elder Zhang Guo
Zhang Guo Lao is reputed to have been a recluse of the 7th or 8th century. He travelled with a white mule that could go incredible distances and then be folded up and placed in a wallet. Zhang Guo Lao had only to sprinkle water to the mule to reconstitute it for further use.
Zhang Guo Lao's attribute is a drum made of a bamboo tube with two rods with which to strike it. The drum can cure life.
He is represented as an old man riding the mule, at times riding backwards.
Zhang Guo Lao is the emblem of old men.

Zhongli Quan (鐘离權; Pinyin: Zhōnglí Quán) - 漢鍾離（かんしょうり）Kanshori または鍾離権（しょうりけん）
Zhongli Quan was reputed to have lived during the Zhou dynasty (1122-256 BC). Among his many powers were transmutation and the knowledge of the elixir of life. His attribute is a fan, which can bring the dead back to life.
He is represented as a Fat Man with his bare belly showing.
Zhongli Quan represents the military man.

Bashiko, Taoist immortal,
considered by the Japanese to be the first veterinary surgeon. He supposedly lived in China in the years 2697-2597 B.C. and cured a dying dragon by operating on its throat. Bashiko is rarely depicted in art, while another Taoist sage, Chinnan, is more popularly shown with dragons.

Kinko - Qin Gao (Kinkô sennin) 琴高仙人 Kinko Sennin
Kinko, who lived beside a river and was a painter of fish.
One day a giant carp offered to take him for a ride into the realm of the immortals. He returned after a month, telling his followers never to kill another fish. He then jumped into the river, where he was transformed into a carp himself. Kinko is usually shown reading a Taoist scroll while riding on the back of the magical fish.

Koshohei
Sennin Koshohei with a short stick in his hand leaning slightly over a small rock that turns into a goat. Koshohei led a herd of goats to the mountains and stayed there for 40 years in meditation. His brother found him after all that this time and was wondering where the goat were. Koshohei touched the boulders around him with a stick, and they turned into goats.

Gama Sennin 蝦蟇仙人 "Toad Immortal"
The Sage with the three-legged Toad

The Japanese legend of Gama Sennin (蝦蟇仙人 "Toad Immortal") is based upon Chinese Liu Hai (劉海), a fabled 10th-century alchemist who learned the secret of immortality from the Chan Chu ("Three-legged Money Toad").
He is a benign sage with great magical knowledge about pills and drugs. He is always accompanied by a toad and he can assume the shape of a toad.
He could also change his skin and become young again.

Gama Sennin, known literally as the 'toad hermit,' a character based on the historical civil servant and alchemist Liu Hai of 10th century China. Various accounts associate Gama with a large, three-legged toad by which he can be identified. Gama was thought to be able to release his spirit from his body, metamorphose, and fly with the aid of his magical companion. Chinese prototypes of this theme sometimes represent the immortal sitting on or resting his foot on the animal and holding a string of gold coins, with which he is supposed to have lured the toad from its hiding place in a well. ...

Jiraiya (自来也 or 児雷也, literally "Young Thunder"),
originally known as Ogata Shuma Hiroyuki, is the toad riding character of the Japanese folklore Jiraiya Gōketsu Monogatari (児雷也豪傑物語, "The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya"). The tale was adapted into a 19th-century serial novel, a kabuki drama, several films, video games and a manga, and has also served as a source of influence for various other works.
In the legend, Jiraiya is a ninja who uses shapeshifting magic to morph into a gigantic toad. As the heir of a powerful clan in Kyūshū of the same name, Jiraiya fell in love with Tsunade (綱手), a beautiful young maiden who has mastered slug magic. His arch-enemy was his one-time follower Yashagorō (夜叉五郎), later known as Orochimaru (大蛇丸), a master of serpent magic (the kanji 大蛇 literally means "giant snake" or "serpent"). It was first recorded in 1806.

The Mystic Dragons' Decisive Battle) is a 1966 tokusatsu kaiju/ninja fantasy film produced by Toei Company Ltd. This film is a loose retelling of the famous Japanese folktale, Jiraiya Gōketsu Monogatari (The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya).

Just like Toei's many superhero shows, this film is just as action-packed and colorful. And to entertain younger audiences, the hero Jiraiya and the villain Orochimaru use ninja magic to transform into daikaiju to battle each other (this was also done in the original story, even though the animals were not necessarily gigantic). Despite the many differences between this film and its source material, this has remained a cult classic.
