義安寺の六部堂 - A hall for a Rokubu pilgrim at 義安寺 Gian-Ji, Matsuyama, Ehime.
This hall is to enshrine the Rokubu named 友兵 Tomohei
He was a rich farmer and had a happy family life - all went well until his wife died of leprosy. He had to bring up his daughter おしげ O-Shige all by himself, but the girl at age 15 got the same disease as her mother. Tomohei bought all kinds of expensive medicine and prayed to the deities, but the girl did not get better. He sold all his fields, put 66 copies of the Lotus Sutra in a pilgrim's backpack and became a 六十六部 Rokujurokubu, walking away with his daughter.

On their way he was told that the hot spring at 道後 Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama would heal. So they went to Matsuyama. By now the daughter was 19 years. But the hot spring did not heal, her face became worse and she had to shield away from human looks.
She died on August 26 in 1806.
When Tomohei came back to his home, he was filled with grief.
He died on the May 18 in 1818.

Despite his deep religious faith he had lost his family. Tomohei died, saying:
"It is no use praying to Kami or Buddha for the safety of yourself and your family.
Pray to me instead."
This temple is called お六部さん O-Rokubu San by the local people.

I tried to cross over this pass and found the route to the pass has completely disappeared. I "swam" in a heavy bush and got the pass at last. None of the pilgrim now walk on this route, I suppose.

quote
Meet Toshio Saeki,
the Master of Japanese Erotica You've Never Heard Of

In a remote Japanese mountain village, a winding road lined with cherry blossom trees and wild boar traps leads the way to Toshio Saeki's home and studio. The 72-year-old artist, who some have christened the "Godfather of Japanese Erotica," has lived here since the 1980s, when he left Tokyo to escape its bubble economy. Today, still actively working, Saeki has published 21 monographs of his erotic art, for which he's earned acclaim and exhibitions all over the world.

Once the best known erotic artist in Tokyo, Saeki has a fervent fanbase spread across the globe and remains a bonafide legend of underground culture. Despite this, his importance to the international art world has long been underestimated, both in Japan and abroad. And his work has never been properly contextualized.

Saeki rose to fame in Tokyo in the 1970s, during the halcyon days of the city's sex scene. He released an early collection of 50 self-published drawings, which were a critical success. "Toshio Saeki conjures death with a pen," wrote the late Japanese critic, poet, and playwright Shūji Terayama, in a letter to the artist in 1969. (Terayama was also the first person to buy one of Saeki's original works.)

In the 1970s, with unbridled explorations of violence, death, and sex in his works, Saeki captured the post-war spirit of cultural rebellion and social reinvention. He was inspired, he says, by a book by French illustrator and writer Tomi Ungerer that arrived in Japan in the 1960s. At art school, he studied Western art, rather than Japanese, finding the latter too often dictated by rules, tradition, and convention.

2018 is the Year of the Dog.

. 12 zodiac animals 干支 eto, kanshi .
Introduction

As an amulet for an easy birth it is known in many parts of Japan.
It comes as a papermachee doll, clay doll or clay bell and other materials.

. INU - the dog 犬 as a kigo .
First of Novebmer (11.1) is "Day of the Dog"
The voice of the Japanese dog is rendered as WAN
wan wan wan (one one one)
This is a play of words.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The deity Inuhime-no-kami 伊奴姫神 is only worshipped in this shrine.
Since a dog gives an easy birth, a pregnant woman has to come to this shrine on the day of the dog in the fifth month of her pregnancy and get a special white maternity band for her stomach (iwataobi, iwata obi 岩田帯) .
Some women by that band at the shrine, others buy it in a shop and bring it here for a special purification ritual before using it.

zarukaburi

The dog is from papermachee, the basked woven from bamboo.
The basked is an amulet for raking in good luck and a healthy upbringing of small children.
The Chinese character for bamboo basket 笊 is a pun with the meaning of the compuond images of the character, bamboo on top of a dog, which is similar to "smile" 笑. This toy will keep the children laughing.

The auspiciuos basket will also let the wind pass through it, so when it is hung over the baby bed, it will prevend the child from getting a stuffed nose or catch a cold.

This happy dog is one of the most typical toys of Edo.
Parents or relatives used to buy it during a first visit with a baby to the nearby shrine or temple.
Many dogs also carry a little toy drum (denden daiko デンデン太鼓).

The dogs from the shrine Torikoe Jinja 鳥超神社 in Taito Ward are most famous.
This shrine is very old and dates back to 651.
The annual festival in June is quite famous, because their portable shrine (mikoshi) is the heaviest in Tokyo.

In the evening, many lanterns provide a joyous atmosphere.

They are made of washi paper, usually a pair of them. Sometimes bamboo and wood are used for the frame.
They are a symbol of fertility and were given to a bride as her trousseau. They were a talisman for easy childbirth.
Some state that the bride had to send back one of the boxes including a piece of paper with the "proof" of her first successfull union with the husband.

They are decorated with auspicious symbols.
