長吉という馬方が馬に塩を乗せて運んでいたところを鬼婆に襲われる。鬼婆の家の天井裏に隠れた長吉が音を立てると、鬼婆は荒神様だと勘違いし、餅を食べさせる。鬼婆が蚊まで寝ているところへ下から火をたくと鬼婆は「やれやれ風もそよそよ吹き出した、起きゆうかい」といい、熱くなってくると「やれやれお日さんも出た、起きゆうかい」と言った。煮殺された鬼婆は唐黍畑に埋められ、それから唐黍の茎が赤くなったのだという。

The Edo Period (1603-1868)
At the beginning of the Edo period in the early seventeenth century, when what is now Kabuto-cho was still an area of sandbanks covered in sedge and Japanese silver grass, the first Tokugawa shogun Ieyasu reclaimed the land there for the new city of Edo that he was building around his castle.
The area, located close to the castle, occupied a militarily strategic position defending Edo against attack from the mouth of the Sumida River and the sea. It was therefore assigned to samurai in the service of the Tokugawa shoguns, especially those with naval expertise, to build their homes on.
The Meiji Period (1868-1912)
In the Meiji period, Kabuto-cho evolved into a center of securities trading and finance.
After the Meiji Restoration in 1868, the lands formerly inhabited by the samurai became government property, and a series of new buildings went up in Kabuto-cho, including the trade and industry department of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, which had jurisdiction over the nation's finances; a branch office of the Tokyo police department (the predecessor of Chuo Police Station); and No. 1 Sakamoto Elementary School (the predecessor of Sakamoto Elementary School).
Some of the land in the Kabuto-cho district was granted to the Mitsui merchant house and others as a reward for their services in the Meiji Restoration. In 1873, First National Bank (the predecessor of Mizuho Bank) was built at the eastern end of Kaiun Bridge. That building, known as Mitsui-gumi ("Mitsui Group") House, became a popular Tokyo attraction. ...

Kabuto Jinja Shrine
Next to Nisshokan Bldg. is the Kabuto ("War Helmet") Shrine, a Shinto shrine dedicated to the patron god of the securities industry.
It was founded in May 1878, when the original Tokyo Stock Exchange was established, to symbolize the faith of those who traded there and watch over them.
There is a boulder within the precincts called Kabutoiwa ("Helmet Rock"), of which the following legend is told. In the Edo period (1603-1868) the Makino clan had its residence on the site, and there was mound on the estate called Helmet Mount where a helmet was interred. It was buried there, according to one version of the story, by the great eleventh-century warrior Minamoto no Yoshiie (or Yoriie) or, according to another, by the tenth-century hero Tawara no Tōta (Fujiwara no Hidesato), who stripped it from the rebel Taira no Masakado after slaying him. Atop the mound, it is said, stood this boulder.s

Just one district.

Around 1640 the area was just a field of reeds and the Tokugawa Shogun came here for hawk hunting.
The 5th Shogun Tsunayoshi 五代将軍綱吉 built a rest place.
In 1709, the 6th Shogun Ienobu 六代将軍家宣 had a palace built, Hama-Goten.
In 1870 it became a public park under the jurisdiction of Kunaisho 宮内省 the Imperial Household Agency.
In 1966 it was renamed 浜離宮庭園 Hamarikyu Teien Park.

In the garden
you can find a pond with a teahouse in the center. Visitors can cross one of the three bridges to reach the teahouse, where they can enjoy refreshment such as matcha and Japanese sweets in a tea-ceremony style. The garden has a peony garden, a plum tree grove and cosmos fields with flowers for every season. Japanese falconry and aikido are demonstrated at New Year.

During the Middle Ages, 新井三郎盛久 the Samuri Arai Saburo Morihisa wanted to avoid the fighting and moved to 武蔵国豊島郡の志村庄 an estate in Shimura, usashino,
He developed the land and built 蓮沼村 the village Hasunuma (lotus swamp).
The village developed well and to give them a Buddhist protector deity, he asked 宥照上人 Saint Yusho to built the temple at the bottom of 志村坂下 Shimurasaka slope.
The grand-child of Morihisa had a special statue of 十一面観世音菩薩 Kannon Bosatsu with 12 heads made, and also a statue of 弘法大師空海 Kobo Daishi, maybe carved by Kobo Daishi himself.

Danzaemon 弾左衛門

穢多頭 (eta-gashira) / 弾左衛門 (Danzaemon)
Danzaemon was the name taken by the head of the eta and other outcastes (including hinin and sarukai as well) in the Kantô region during the Edo period. The name is believed to have been passed down in a hereditary fashion, or at least to have been continuously held down through the generations.
The Danzaemon held some degree of direct authority (and responsibility) over the outcaste districts of the city of Edo, and of twelve surrounding provinces under his leadership, including the eight provinces of the Kantô, Izu, Kai, Suruga, and parts of Mutsu province, as well as a lesser degree of authority, and responsibility, over all the outcaste districts (buraku) throughout Japan.
The history of the position, or of the first man to hold it, are unclear, but it is assumed that the first Danzaemon was granted this role by the Tokugawa shogunate. The position seemed to have become definite by the mid-17th century, and from the mid-18th century onwards, the geographical extent of the Danzaemon's authority gradually expanded.
Thirteen men are believed to have held the title over the course of the Edo period, ending with Dannaiki, or Naoki, who was stripped of the role - and of the status, authority, and responsibilities associated with it - around the time of the Meiji Restoration.

桐淵という与力の家には化物が出るという。ある日桐淵の女房が下女を呼んだところ、から紙をあけてご用はとかしこまる下女の顔は重箱だったという。その後に床下にとても深い穴があり、それを埋めると化物も出てこなくなったという。

ある時、雪飛という人物が与力の桐淵という者の家に行ったところ、その家の下女が真っ青な顔をして2階から下りてきた。下女が言うには化物が2階から落ちてきたという。雪飛がこわごわ2階に上がると、鏡台がおいてあり、この鏡に何らかの化物が映ったのだろうという。

ある欲深い神道者が、狂乱した人を正気にした祈祷のお礼として箱をもらい、ふたをひらくなと言われた。家に帰ると大勢の者が様々な宝を持ってきて、神道者と家の者は宝の中で寝た。翌日には宝はすべて穢れたものになっていた。

小島清次郎という男が、夜に友達数人と古川に魚を掬いにいった。小島はその時足をけがしていたので川中に入らず、岡で手桶を持っていたが、そこに大男が現れて道を遮った。身体が大きかった清次郎は別段驚かずに脇を通ったが、手桶の魚が1匹もいなくなっていたという。

麻生で寛政八年の秋ごろ、ある人が霊夢を見たといって椙田稲荷の近くに住む老婆に祈祷を頼みに来て、老婆は祈祷など知らなかったが、稲荷を拝ませ腹をさすってやると、その人の病気が治った。それ以来参詣者が増えて、望む者には洗米を配った。また、老婆が稲荷に尋ねて答えることに、間違ったことはなかった。あまりに人が増えて無縁の人の参詣を禁止したら、流行はおさまった。

tanuki no kai 狸の怪
文政１１年３月ある家に仕える身寄りのない老女が病気になり、しばらく息をしなかった。以来様子がおかしくなり老女の周りに狸が現れるようになった。病が悪化したある夜老女の所へ阿弥陀が現れ手を引いていった。同じ頃老女の部屋に狸が入るのを見た者がいた。思うに、一度死んだ時に、その死体に老狸がついたのであろう。

与力の家で赤子が無事生まれ、産婆が来たが、その産婆が赤子を抱いて空き長屋へ走りこんでいった。すぐに追いかける内、また産婆が現れたので捕らえたところ、この産婆は本物の産婆だった。赤子を抱いていった最初の婆がいかなるものか分からず、その内に出火して跡形もなくなってしまった。

天暦年中に近江国甲賀郡の連林という僧が、東国修行の為に氷川へ来た。その日の夢に白髪の老人が現れて、地中に長年埋もれているので掘り出して安置してくれれば、この地の守護神となると告げた。そこで近辺を探してみると、ある場所が金色に輝いており、掘ってみれば十一面観音像があった。そこで社を建てて祀ったという。治暦2年の関八州の日照りでは、この社に雨を祈るとたちまち大雨となった。

赤坂に馬鹿の乞食で亀次という者がいた。後にさる大名衆の子に生まれ変わった。生まれた時、手を開かず、次第に開いてきたら手のひらに亀次という文字があった。

愛宕下天徳寺という寺の鬼瓦は兜巾（ときん）をかぶっている。ある時、火事の火の粉が燃え移りそうになったが、この瓦から水が出て、火を消した。

家のそばに字を鷹石という町がある。昔、鷹の形の石を掘り出して霊異があった。今はもう無い。

麻布に異石が５種類ある。寒山拾得石像に切られた痕が残っている。夜久神の石像は願をかけると験が多く、長谷寺の僧の霊夢によって長谷寺に置かれるようになった。陰陽石が縁結びの願を成就する。道路に埋った石が願を成就する。烏帽子形の石に日月の像が現れた。

kieta onna 消えた女
玉置清吉が提灯も持たずに麻布古川の辺りを歩いていると、前から40歳ほどの美しい女性が歩いてきた。おかしいなと思いつつ通り過ぎようとしたところ、女が道を尋ねたので教えたが、女は返事もせずに去っていった。数間ほどして振り返ると、その女はおらず、どこからか変な笑い声が聞こえたという。

享保10年6月、麻布市兵衛町のある人の下女に狐が付き、祈祷などしたが効果は無かった。様々な事を口走り、我は松平紀伊守様屋敷の狐であるが、住居が成し難いために方々へ罷り越している。石川近江守様屋敷の稲荷は娘で、山王町の稲荷は女房である。親類との距離も良いのでここに小社を建てて欲しい。小社を建ててくれると近所の火難は除けようと語った。

麻布笄町の長谷寺に夜叉明王堂というのがある。源義朝の臣、渋谷金王麿が長者丸というところに築城のとき、城の北隅に鎮地の神として石像を埋め置いた。江戸時代に阿部豊後守の臣安川繁成がその地に住んで井戸を掘りその石像を発見した。これを身近に置いて愛玩していると金王麿の霊がたびたび奇瑞を現すので、ついに奉安したものという。その後石像にかたどった鬼の面を奉納し、祈願すると霊験あらたかといわれ今なお多くの信仰を得ている。

兵法の達人が榎坂の借家に住んでいたが、夜になると何者かが現れた。寛永１１年正月１５日の夜寝床を調え隠れていると、両眼星のようなすさまじい形相のものが現れた。仕留めると古狸だった。その後、騒がしい市中に狸が住むのはおかしい、自作自演だろうと噂が立ち、その人は行方知らずになった。

備後福山の城主の奥方が口中の痛みの為に死んだ時、今後口中の悩みのあるものは私に祈願すれば治してやるといった。霊験があらたかであるので、その墓の土を取り寄せ江戸の芝、瓦町５丁目の善長寺にも石塔を建てた。

享保10年2月17日のこと、増上寺御霊屋の普請時に、3丈ほど土を掘ったところで生きた河豚がでてきた。

増上寺の寮の若い僧に狐が憑いて、所作が女のようになった。寮主に向かって言うには、隣舎の庭の祠に住んでいたが、寮主が祠を壊し捨てたので住む所が無い。庭に祠を建てて欲しいという。寮主が来歴を尋ねたら、洛西久世の者で、数百年前にこちらに来た「花崎」というものだという。その後祠も建てられ、鳥居には狐が書いた「花崎社」という額が今もあるという。

増上寺内の寮舎に狐の祠があったのだが、初午に近隣の僧を招いて酒販などを行い、祠にも供え物をした。しかし次の日、寮中の僧が玄関にいた時に、烏帽子装束の人が来て頼みがあるという。聞いてみれば、長年住んでいた祠に弁天が影向されたので別に祠を造って欲しいと言う。寮主に報告したところ、寮主は怪しんで初午の日に祠へ供え物をした者に何を念じながら供え物をしたのか問うた。すると弁天を念じたという。そうであればと、別の祠を近くに構えた。すると程なく烏帽子装束の人が現れ礼を述べた。

元禄年中のこと、増上寺脇寺の徳水院で赤猫を飼っていた。ある時、その猫がねずみを追いかけながら梁から落ちた時、南無三宝と叫んだので、人々が猫まただったのかと言ったところ、どこかへ行ってしまった。

江戸芝田町八丁目で、夫を恨んで死んだ妻の蒲団の下に６～７尺の黒蛇が死んでいた。蛇を海に捨てると生き返り男より先に家に戻った。妻の四十九日が過ぎてから新しい女を招き入れたが、翌日逃げ帰った。恐ろしい事が起ったのだろう。

The gate stands 500 meters away from the shrine itself. According to the records, it was constructed in 1556 in the style of Koraimon which features beams and bars.

At Akagi Jinja 赤城神社 Akagi Shrine there is an amulet with the centipede.

Since the centipede has "many legs" it will help bring "many legs" to a shop and is thus an amulet for prosperous business.
The Snake Deity is venerated for bringing iron sand to the local river, thus promoting the local iron industry.
The Mukade Deity is venerated for digging underground, helping the mining industry, even finding gold.

Akagisan no oni 赤城山の鬼 The Demons from Akagisan and Harunasan
Once the tow demons got into a fight. The demon from Akagi threw 小石 small stones and the demon from Haruna threw bara バラ（茨）plants with many thorns.
Therefore on Mount Akagisan there are many plants with thorns and on Mount Harunasan there are many small stones.

These two animal deities fought at Senjōgahara 戦場ヶ原 Senjogahara, the "Battlefield" marshland in Nikko.
They were the vassals of the deity of 男体山　Nantaisan in Chuzenji and the deity from 赤城山　Akagiyama.
Now there is an Akanuma　赤沼 "Red swamp" of the blood from the Mukade.

At 赤堀 Akahori every year there was a home where an arrow with white feathers stuck in the front door. This family had to offer the daughter to 小沼 Lake Kono, a volcanic lake.
Then one day Hirosato came by and killed the centipede in the lake. Thus the village was saved.

Lake Harunako 榛名湖 is also called Ikaho no numa 伊香保の沼 Swamp of Ikaho.

善導寺の住持・道阿上人の母が、明徳4（1393）年4月8日榛名権現に参拝しての帰りに、伊香保の沼に身を投げ、はたひろ（約24m）の大蛇になった。上人が会いに行くと、鱗3枚を渡し、善導寺に水の不自由はさせないと約束した。上人は沼の辺に石碑を建立した。
善導寺の住持・道阿上人の母が、明徳5（1394）年4月20日、榛名宮に参拝しての帰りに、伊香保の沼に身を投げ、角のある大蛇になった。上人が追善供養をすると、霊夢に母が現れて、元々筑紫広島池の蛇身であったが、仏道の種を得るために人間に化して人の妻となり、上人を生んだものである、よく追善供養してくれ、と言った。

chisen 地仙 the local saint
At the 温泉 hot spring of Ikaho there was a wood cutter, but nobody knew how old he was.
Some village elders claim he was a flag holder of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and came here on his way to The Northern Territory to fight the Ezo. To show his appreciation, Yoshitsune taught him how to use 灸 moxibustion, which Yoshitsune had learned from the Hermit Hitachibo Kaison. He used this medicine to become a long-living saint in the village.

Girls of the age of 16 are not allowed to climb Mount Akahorisan.

Once the 16 year old daughter of Akahori Dogen, who was born out of prayers to the deity and had scaled at her side, climbed the mountain, jumped into the 沼 swamp and became a huge serpent / a dragon.
Dogen dug a canal to drain the swamp, the remains are to be seen in our day.
The robes of the girl have been given as amulets to local temples. At the temple 湧丸の医光寺 Wakimaru no Iko-Ji her belt is shown every year on the 8th day of the fourth lunar month.
There is a special dance st the temple

The Mukade Deities from Akagi and the Snake Deity from Nikko had a fight.
Nikko lost and run away. All the trees became red from its blood and the mountain was then called
"Red Tree Mountain", 赤木山 Akagi. Later the spelling changed to 赤城山

At Akagiyama there is the valley 九十九谷 Kujukudani (99 valleys). If there would be one more valley, it would be like the 100 valleys of 高野山 Koyasan in Wakayama. Then the fight between Akagi the Mukade and Nikko the Snake started.
The Mukade from Akagi was bound with オカボの藁 the leaves of okabo, Kabocha pumpkin.
Since that time the believers in 赤城様 the Akagi deity do not grow pumpkin.

大蛇 / 赤堀道元
赤城山へ16歳の娘は登ってはいけない。赤堀道元という大尽の娘は、16歳になったら脇の下にコケ（鱗）が3枚生えた。モウ跡取りにはなれないと言って赤城山へ行き、小沼に入って蛇体になった。赤堀家では旧暦4月8日に小沼に赤飯をおさめる。道元の娘は神様に願掛けして授かったと言う。

大蛇
赤堀道元という長者の娘が16歳になったとき、赤城山に行きたいというので行かせたら、大沼に入っていなくなってしまった。道元はクロクワセンチョウ（土木集団）に頼んで沼を干そうとしたら、沼の中から娘が白い牛に乗って現れて「やめてくれ」と頼んだ。娘は大蛇になったのだという。以来、16の娘は赤城に行ってはいけないことになり、5月8日の赤城の山開きには道元の家から重箱に詰めた赤飯を沼に入れている。医光寺には娘の帯があるという。

日照りが続いたとき、赤堀道元という大尽の娘は、17歳で赤城山へ行き、自分が沼に入れば沼を掘り割って水が流れるだろうと思って、小沼に入って沼の主の大蛇になった。道元は沼を掘り割ったが、娘は見つからなかった。赤堀一帯には水が行き渡り、無事田植えができた。

大蛇，池の主
昔、猟師が矢を砥いでいると、小さなかなへびが来て、指を呑み込もうとするので、砥ぎすました矢で上顎を思い切り突いた。怪物が池に逃げ込むと雷鳴と共に池の水は龍巻を起こした。近所の人が見に行くと池の主の大蛇が顎を破られて無残に死んでいた。

昔、利根川の上流から１匹の大蛇が流れてきて、「龍王の岩」に這い上ったといい、両岩の間には底知れぬ深い淵が渦を巻いており、その底は竜宮に達していると伝えられている。

赤城山へ16歳の娘は登ってはいけない。赤堀の道元という大尽の娘に、夜な夜な誰か通ってくる。着物に針を刺して血をたどると、それは蛇だった。娘は赤城山へ行き、小沼に入って蛇体になった。毎年5月8日にはその小沼におひつでこわめしを流す。おひつは一旦沈んで、空になって浮く。また、5月5日には女は菖蒲酒を飲み、菖蒲湯に入ると、宿った蛇の子が流れる。

赤城山へ16歳の娘は登ってはいけない。赤堀の道元という大尽の娘は、16歳で赤城山へ行き、見初められて、帰って来てからも赤城が恋しくてたまらなくなった。親が倉に閉じ込めておいたが、背中にコケ（鱗）が生えてきたのであきらめて赤城に送ると、小沼に入って大蛇になった。毎年5月8日にはその小沼にホケエで赤飯を流す。ホケエは一旦沈んで、空になって浮いてくる。

たびたび火災に遭う法灯寺に上州赤城山から杉の坊という僧が来て造営してやろうと述べた。礼を言いに赤城山へ使者が行き里人に聞くとそれは大天狗だと言った。造営の約束の日、一夜のうちに七堂伽藍が完成していた。

お天狗

高野辺家成の留守に、後妻が悪い家来と組んで先妻の娘の2人を渕に沈めようとした。家成が帰って娘の行方を聞くと、赤城山のお天狗にさらわれたというので、天狗退治に赤城山へ行ったが、奥方と家来達の仕業とわかって、そちらを成敗した。

kaki 火気
享保の頃、江戸で大火事があった4年後の正月。赤城山で夜な夜な火が燃えた。その後4月14日に青山から火が出て大火事となり、赤城あたりで人が死んだ。正月に見えたのは、火気が集まっている様子だったものと思われる。

kamo 鳧
高野辺左大将家成には先妻の娘３人と長子左少将がいたが、家成が留守のとき、後妻が娘２人を殺した。家成は山の池で殺された２人の娘が鳧に乗っているのを見た。この鳧は島になり、それが赤城山頂にある大沼の中の小鳥ケ島だと言われている。

過去1年以内に死者があった家の人は、4月8日に赤城山の地蔵岳に登り、死者の名を呼ぶと空の彼方に死者の姿が見える、死者によく似た人が見つかる、という。

クルマバン（水車の見張り）に出ると、赤城山麓のある箇所に２０個から成る一列の灯火の様なものが現れる。それをキツネビと言い、点いた順に消えるという。

多那の桑原姓の者が16歳のときは赤城山に登ってはいけない。山の神と沼の主に祟られて、豪雨や霧で道に迷い、無事に下山できない。

osaki オサキ ?a kind of fox ? 甘楽地方のオサキ
オサキは血縁的血統によって家につく。利益神として信仰され、オサキを飼うとか使うことによって、米や粉、蚕等を他家から持参させる。徳川期にはオサキ持が排斥されたことが文書に残されている。

Benten 弁天
溝呂木にはワクタマという清水が湧き出る場所がある。そこに弁天様の石祠を祀っている。その祠に水をかけると必ず雨が降るという。夏に日照りがつづき、陸稲がよれてしまったとき、ワクタマにいき、この祠の弁天様に水をかけたら、翌日夕立があり陸稲が助かった。

お婆さんが孫をおぶって赤城山に栗拾いに行ったが、行方知れずになり、3日後、赤城有料道路の料金所のところで見つかった。きれいな娘に案内されて山の中に行ったと言う。オトカ（キツネ）に化かされた。

Suwa sama no shinboku 諏訪様の神木 sacred tree of the Suwa Deity
This sacred tree was supposed to be cut down for 江戸玉川上水 a waterway of the Tamagawa in Edo, but the chips of wood were all back over night. From the cut some red liquid was pouring out and they said 越後の杣人 a wood cutter from Echigo had died.
