Emperor proclaims enthronement in a ceremony



A ceremony to mark the accession of Japan's Emperor Naruhito has taken place at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. He took the throne in May. Today his accession is being celebrated by leaders of Japan and dignitaries from around the world.

He gave the following speech:

Having previously succeeded to the Imperial Throne in accordance with the Constitution of Japan and the Special Measures Law on the Imperial House Law. I now perform the Ceremony of Enthronement at the Seiden State Hall and proclaim my enthronement to those at home and abroad.
I deeply reflect anew that for more than 30 years on the Throne, His Majesty the Emperor Emeritus constantly prayed for the happiness of the people and world peace, always sharing in the joys and sorrows of the people, and showing compassion through his own bearing. I pledge hereby that I shall act according to the Constitution and fulfill my responsibility as the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people of Japan, while always wishing for the happiness of the people and the peace of the world, turning my thoughts to the people and standing by them.
I sincerely hope that our country, through our people's wisdom and unceasing efforts, achieves further development and contributes to the friendship and peace of the international community and the welfare and prosperity of humankind.

What are the 'Takamikura' and the 'Michodai'?



The "Takamikura" throne is said to have been used for important ceremonies since the Nara period, which began in the 8th century.
The current throne, along with the Empress' "Michodai," or the "August Seat", was made in 1913 upon the accession of Emperor Taisho. It has since been used by his two successors: Emperor Showa and the current Emperor's father, Emperor Emeritus Akihito.
The "Takamikura" stands nearly 6.5 meters high. It consists of an elaborately decorated octagonal canopy on a 6-meter-square dais.
The sides of the raised platform are decorated with panels of a phoenix and a dragon-headed creature, called a "Qilin."
The canopy is topped with a large golden statue of a phoenix. Smaller statues adorn the eight corners, with 28 mirrors between them.
Stands called "An" are placed inside the "Takamikura". It is where the sacred sword and the sacred jewel, along with the State Seal and the Privy Seal will be placed.

The "Michodai" has a similar structure, but it is slightly smaller. It's 5.5 meters high, with a 5-meter-square dais.
Curtains hang under the canopies with chairs for the Emperor and Empress in the middle.
At the enthronement ceremony, the Emperor ascends the dais and proclaims his accession.
The Emperor and Empress will only be seen once the curtains are opened.



What is the "Kourozen-no-Gohou"?



The Emperor will wear a traditional reddish brown robe called the "Kourozen-no-Gohou" that can be worn only by an emperor.
The robe was already used as attire for emperors in the 9th century.
It has patterns of paulownia, bamboo, phoenix, and the imaginary Chinese beast called "Qilin" woven in the cloth.
Emperor Meiji was the first emperor who wore the Kourozen-no-Gohou for his enthronement ceremony in 1868.
His predecessors, including his father Emperor Komei, wore a Chinese-style red robe called "benpuku" for their enthronement ceremonies.
Currently, Kourozen-no-Gohou is most commonly worn for rituals at the Imperial Palace.
The Emperor wore the attire a week after his accession to the throne in May for the first time. He performed rituals to report to his ancestors and various deities the dates of main ceremonies following his accession.




A new role as Emperor and Empress
It's been almost half a year since the Emperor ascended the throne. While Emperor Naruhito has been following in his father's footsteps as a Symbol of the state, he's also been searching for a more modern vision as Emperor.
On May 1, the Emperor took part in the "Kenji-to-Shokei-no-gi" -- a ceremony to inherit the Imperial Regalia from his father, Emperor Emeritus Akihito.
"I sincerely pray for the happiness of the people and the further development of the nation, as well as the peace of the world," the new Emperor said in his first speech.
To celebrate the succession, 140,000 people visited the Imperial Palace. The couple appeared on the palace balcony six times three days later to greet the public.
The couple has embarked on a new period of imperial diplomacy. Both have spent years living overseas, and have a wide range of international experience to draw on in their interactions and activities going forward.
In late May, the US President came to Japan as a state guest. Both the Emperor and Empress were able to talk with the Trumps without translators.
The imperial couple has visited many regions of the country. One destination was Aichi Prefecture, in central Japan. Crowds of people gathered along the roads to welcome the pair. One woman said, "I don't know why but I have tears in my eyes." A young mother said, " Seeing them inspires me to do my best in life, with my child."
The imperial couple went to a facility for people with disabilities in the prefecture, staying beyond their scheduled hours so they could speak with everyone.
On August 15th, the couple attended a government ceremony to mark the 74th anniversary of the end of World War Two. The Emperor expressed his hope for peace.
He said, "Reflecting on our past and bearing in mind the feelings of deep remorse, I earnestly hope that the ravages of war will never again be repeated.
Together with all of our people, I now pay my heartfelt tribute to all those who lost their lives in the war, both on the battlefields and elsewhere, and pray for world peace and for the continuing development of our country."
Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako have continued to travel across the country, as part of their goal in building a strong bond with the Japanese people, from children to elders.




Who are ceremonial attendants?
People in traditional robes will line the palace corridor, as the central enthronement ceremony, called "Sokuirei-Seiden-no-gi," takes place in the "Matsu-no-Ma" State Room.
Ceremonial attendants including "Iginomono," who each carry a sword, a bow and arrows, as well as "Igimono Hojisha," who bear ceremonial items and officials in charge of gongs and drums were originally scheduled to take part.
A total of 78 of the attendants were planned to stand in line outside in the courtyard, along with other officials. But the Imperial Household Agency decided at the last minute to reduce the number to 25 because of heavy rain.
Twenty-six banners, called "ban," will be displayed in the courtyard, as originally planned.
Two bear the word "Banzai" and are nearly nine meters long. The word is embroidered in gold yarn, based on calligraphy drawn by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Ceremony marked with commemorative events
Railways and other businesses across Japan are celebrating the Emperor's enthronement ceremony with special offers.
The operator of the 333-meter-tall Tokyo Tower started selling 10,000 tickets to its main observation deck from 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
The tickets, featuring designs marking the ceremony, are priced the same as regular tickets. Many visitors purchased them, with some saying they made the trip just to get the souvenirs.
Visitors to the 150-meter-high deck were enjoying the view of the capital under rainy skies.
A man in his 60s said he wants people to use the national holiday to celebrate the enthronement and think about the preciousness of peace.
Osaka Metro is also selling commemorative tickets. More than 100 people waited in line early on Tuesday morning at a special sales booth set up at Shin-Osaka Station on the subway Midosuji Line.
The 9-by-20-centimeter ticket features phoenixes, chrysanthemum flowers and other images. One set contains five tickets. A total of 5,000 sets were on offer.
A sixth-grader says he will put his set on display in his bedroom.
People in Dazaifu City in Fukuoka Prefecture, western Japan, are also in a festive mood. The city is associated with an ancient poem from which the name of Japan's new era, Reiwa, was taken.
West Japan Railway added a supplementary name, "Reiwa no Sato," to its Tofuro-mae Station, which is close to the Sakamoto Hachimangu shrine.
The railway unveiled a new name plate for the station in a ceremony on Tuesday.
The design features images from Japan's oldest poetry anthology, which inspired the name Reiwa.

丑の刻参り
結婚したくない相手がいる、離婚したい、呪い殺したい時には、蟇目鹿島神社に丑の刻参りをする。これを21日間行い、21日目に神社境内のいちょうの木に五寸釘を親指で押し込んでしまうほど力がこもっていれば願いがかなうというが、その時は髪をふり乱し、口にかみそりをくわえ、鏡を抱き、手にろうそくを持っている。また、途中で人に出会うと願いはかなわぬという。

The 尾張大納言 Lord of Owari once came to Tsushima for hunting with hawks.
To make some special medicine he wanted 狐の生肝 the liver of a living fox. 餌指の市兵衛 Hyoe from Ezanshi captured a fox and got all the meat and fur of the fox as reward.
His wife who was at 清洲 Kiyosu became bewitched by a fox, who wanted to have his revenge.
The 大納言 Lord Dainagon thought the fox was a reijuu 霊獣 sacred animal and sent his retainer 真島権左衛門 Nabeshima Gonzaemon. He let the animal know that he was sacred and had given his life to heal other human beings, which was a rewardable thing to do.
The fox felt honored and let go of the bewitchment.

Once the Lord of Owari went hunting with hawks in the evening.
He heard the voice coming from the mountain forest:
"Where is the Lord of Owari who had killed a saru 猿 monkey on 申の歳申の月申の日 the special day of the monkey in the hour of the monkey during the year of the monkey?"
His companions and he himself could not move any more.
The Lord called for a very strong man to help. This man called toward the mountain:
"Who is it out there? Who is it out there?"
In the morning it seemed the monster has left the place and all came back to their senses.

Once a family of seven went hunting for hawks, (which was forbidden), and even ate the hawk. They were executed by chopping off their heads. Later if people walk by that ground, they will soon encounter some misfortune. The souls of the seven are now venerated at a small Hokora sanctuary as

At the shrine 小倉八坂神社 Kokura Yasaka Jinja there is a legend about the beginning of the festival.
Once Lord 細川越中守忠興 Hosokawa Tadaoki (1563 - 1646) went hunting with hawks and took a rest at 不動山 Mount Fudoyama.
There was one small stone shrine and when Tadaoki placed his staff against it, it opened and one 霊鷹 sacred hawk flew out of it. The hawk kicked out both eyes of Tadaoki. He felt great pain, went home soon but would not heal at all. He realized it was the punishment of Gozu Tenno and had a shrine built in his honor. After a performance of a ritual Kagura, 神楽湯立, one eye begun to heal. He had 能興行 another ritual of Noh performed and the other eye begun to heal too.

In the area of 阿曽沼 Asonuma swamp lived a man skilled with falcons.
One day he captured oshidori 鴛の雄 a male mandarin duck.
That night in a dream a beauiful woman appeared, crying in dispair.
"Why did you kill my husband?" The hunter said "But I did not kill anybody!"
"Yes you did, today in the swamp." Then she flew off and he saw it was the female mandarin duck.
Next morning he looked at the male duck and saw a female one, her beak like kissing him.
The man had a great shock, stopped hunting and became a monk.

In Edo in the district 通銀町二丁目 Tsugin lived a merchant called 堯順 Takayasu. He had employed the child of a hunter who was responsible to provide food for the Falconry in Hachioji. But this child died in an epidemy. They washed the body and wanted to cut its hair, but the scissors did not cut a thing. Then Takayasu looked closer, he saw a beak of a bird had grown at the head, almost as hard as a stone. This was around the year 1680.

Once there was a thunderbolt at 虚空蔵山 Mount Kokuzo-Yama. But Kokuzo Bosatsu caught the Raiju Yokai and told him "If you do that once again at this place, I will not let you go!"
Since that time, there has not been a thunderbolt any more.
The villagers were very pleased about it and now have a festival every year on January 13.
In other parts they also know that if you venerate Kokuzo Bosatsu, there will be no thunderbolt.

- Why is Raijin attracted to navels?
While it is said that Kaminari-sama would seek out little children's bellybuttons or navels, in recorded folklore, it was actually Raiju, the thunder beast that accompanies Raijin, that actually seeks out human navels, and that likes to nestle there to sleep.

大和秋篠寺には雷の臍という碑がある。天平の頃金堂に落雷して火事になったときの長老が、呪文をとなえて雷をとらえ、その臍をぬき再び落ちないと誓わせて放してやったといい、その臍を埋めたところであるらしい。

享保2年6月に江州大津の民家に落雷したが、そのとき麝香の臍のようなものがあって香りがよく、雷糞として薬に用いた。

In the year 1717, a was rakurai 落雷 a stroke of lightning at the home of a family in Otsu.
It came with a fragrant smell of jakoo 麝香 musk and left a piece of string like a navel. Since the smell was so good, it was used to make raifun medicine 雷糞 "like the poop of the Thunder god".

The passage of Raijin as thunder and lightning is often quite predictable. Strikes of lightning and damage are often along the same path and in many regions the Deity is therefore venerated in a Shrine along this path, called
Raiden Jinja 雷電神社.

A deity that reigns over rain, snow and water. Maybe identical with ryuujin 竜神 Ryujin, the Dragon Deity.



In the old records 豊後風土記 Bungo no Fudoki they mention that OKAMI makes hail and thunder fall on the earth.
To drive it away people have to use something to make a rattling sound.
In 山国 a mountainous country they had a ritual named 雷狩 "hunting for thunder". When performing this, the thunder could be driven out of the area.
The sound of thunder was equal with the idea of raijin 雷神 the God of Thunder.
OKAMI would handle the clouds.
With the rattling sound of the ritual, both could be driven away.

raijinkoo 雷神皇 "Emperor Raijin"
In 楢葉郡浅川 the hamlet Asakawa of Nahara district the villagers always come to pray at the shrine 雷神宮 Ikazuchi no Miya (Raijin no Miya).
Once in Spring, a couple went out to their fields to work and placed a cradle with their baby on the side. There came a large wolf with white hair and wanted to eat the baby.
In that instant there was a stroke of lightning and killed the wolf. This was the way of the deity to show its gratitude.

The place for getting rain water for the fields is sacred.
The 6th day of the 5th lunar month is called
Raijin Sama no Hi 雷神様の日 day of the venerable Thunder god.
On this day farmers are not allowed to go work in the fields.

In the third lunar month, farmers come to pray to the Thunder Deity at Mito, to get an amulet for rain and a good harvest.
Strong men from the village run to the Shrine, receive bamboo poles filled with water and bring them to the village. The water is spread to the fields and soon it will rain . . . they say.

When lightning strikes a home, they go to the small shrine to pray to 雷神様 Raijin Sama.
In いわき地方 the Iwaki region they place four green bamboo poles with ritual paper slips. If they do not do this, 雷様 Rai Sama will not go back to the sky but will stay on and devastate the fields. If they put up bamboo poles, he can use them to go back to the sky.

Once 雷神 Raijin fell down from the sky when he was a small child and a local farmer couple took him in as their child.
From then on their fields always had enough rain, even in a kanbatsu 旱魃 drought all around them.
A while later the child became a dragon and moved into the sky.
Since then the field was called tatsuta 竜田 and Tatsuta became the name of the area too.

Once there was a region troubled by a lot of lightning.
One day a brave young man saw the lightning fall into a well and took a large stone to cover the well.
Now 雷神 Raijin was in confinement.
The young man made Raijin promise never to come to this region again, then he let him go.
Since then there have not been any strikes of lightning in this area.

Once there was a region troubled by a lot of lightning.
One day the deity 住吉明神 Sumiyoshi Myojin picked out the eyes of 雷神 Raijin and then let him go.
Since then there have not been any strikes of lightning in this area.

Once a woodcutter helped helped 雷神 Raijin to climb back to the sky.
Then the man remembered that his village was often suffering from water shortage.
So Raijin came back to the village and became a lake.

raiden sama 雷電様 honorable Thunder deity
The family of 茂呂定夫 Moro Sadao venerates 雷神様 Raijin Sama, who had come from Itakura.
Once the ancestors had visited the shrine 雷神神社 / 雷電神社 Raiden Jinja in Itakura, Gunma and asked the deity to come to their home once.
When they came back to their home, there was a strong thunder and 雷様 Rai Sama had been rolling bottles from the front door and out of the back door.

ある旅人が山頂の風穴に吸い込まれて天上に着き、雷鳴の太鼓叩きをすることになったが、興じすぎて雲を踏み外し、下界の羽黒山に落ちた。雷が落ちたと集まってきた人々に訳を話すと、雷神の太鼓は雲で作られておりどんな病気も治せると言われる。はたしてその通り、病人の前で叩くと忽ち全快した。

Many homes venerate their very own
. yashikigami 屋敷神 "estate deity" .

Jiguroo sama ジグロー様 Jiguro Sama
In the town of 鎮西町 Chinzeimachi the family 坂口家 Sakaguchi venerates Jiguro Sama.
When they built their house in 1865, they did not know about Jiguro sama and were reprimanded.
So they begun to venerate Jiguro Sama, the local Yabugami, as their "estate deity".

Koichirogami 小一郎神 Koichiro no Kami
He is a kind of yashikigami 屋敷神 "estate deity" in Northern Kyushu.
Before he was venerated as Yabugami, many people in the village were very ill.
There is also a forest for him, 小一郎森 Koichiro Mori.

Once the home of an ishiku 石工 stone mason was hit by a fire, but there was no reason for a fire to break out in the first place and no strong wind either. So he had a divination about his fate. He had often taken stones ouf of the Koichiro Moir and the deity was angry. He had promised to have a 神楽 Kagura performance for the Deity but forgotten to keep his promise, so his home burned down

- at 大神村 the village Ogamura
The 佐藤家f Sato family venerated Koichirogami in their estate forest.
In November they held a festival in his honor and prayed to all the deities in the region.


Koichiro Jinja 小一郎神社 Koichiro Shinto Shrine
a famous place in Sada 佐田の名所

A deity to ward off evil and disaster, also to help with birth.
The person named Koichiro of this shrine seems to be the Samurai 新田小一郎義氏 Niida Koichiro (新田義氏 Niida Yoshiuji) of the castle 馬ヶ岳城 Umagatake Jo (present day 福岡県行橋市津積馬ヶ岳).

Most common at 国東半島 Kunisaki peninsula until South to Fukuoka and a few in Kumamoto.
Sometimes venerated as a stone monument with the name. Often in a forest 小一郎森 Koichiro Mori, where people are not allowed to cut trees.
These places are often in a thicked (yabu).
The spelling can be 小一郎、小市郎、今日霊、古市老、魂市郎、濃血霊、千人霊 ...

A grave where the dead person is not known is called
yabu-baka 藪墓 (yabu no haka) grave in the thicket.
People who get a high fever or hurting legs and lower back pain are maybe cursed by Yabugami.

Kishidake, Kishitake 岸岳 Mount Kishidake
There was a family which venerated Yabugami, but not as a Shinto deity but a Buddhist protector.
If they cut a tree or bamboo in his sacred forest they were cursed.
Yabugami is a relative of the deity from Mount Kishidake, who was split of from the main line because he behaved badly.
There is also a castle at the mountain, 鬼子岳城 Kishidake Jo.

Yabugami 藪神 Kami of the thicket, of the bamboo grove
At 元山 Motoyama near 角島 Tsunoshima they use bow and arrow for Shinto rituals at the local Shrine and call the thicket nearby ヤブガミ Yabugami.
Half way on the mountain of Motoyama there is a kofun 古墳 tumulus in a bamboo grove called Yabugami.
The deity residing there is rather wild and feared by the people.
At 尾山 Oyama they keep a part of the land without cultivating anything and call the thicket Yabugami.
The fields around it are called 神様田 Fields of the Deity.
Water for the fields is provided by 水の神 Mizunokami, seen as Yabugami.

Sarutahiko サルタヒコ is the ancestor of the Tengu.

He is considered the ancestor of the Ujitoko clan in Ise, and the central object of worship at the Sarutahiko Shrine located in Ise.

Yamazaki Ansai,
drawing on the association of shin with the monkey (saru), advocated a Shintoistic kōshin cult, in which the primary object of worship was Sarutahiko. Within the Shugendō tradition as well, a unique form of the kōshin cult was propagated, so that there were three varieties of the faith: Buddhist, Shintō, and Shugendō.

Fukui 福井県 福井市 Fukui town

shishigashira 獅子頭 lion head mask
During winter time, a Shishigashira is offered to the Sarutahiko shrine.
At the 今市 Imaichi district of Fukui town, once upon a time, chilren had been picking up dried wood and whilst playing around put the lion head mask on and danced around. But then one could not get his head out any more. The head priest came to help and perform ritals, but it did not have any effect. So they called a 仏師 Buddhist Master Carver, who cut it off with his 鑿 chisel. But the child developed a high fever and died soon afterwards.

猿田彦神社の春祭り Spring Festival at Sarutahiko Shrine
held on the 15th day of April. There is a 獅子の頭 lion head mask, a Tengu mask and a hoko 鉾 a long spear from the shrine brought to a family in the village over night.
The food offerings are amazake 甘酒 sweet Sake, sekihan 赤飯 red ritual rice, botamochi ぼたもち rice cakes and others.
Next day the ritual objects are brought back to the shrine.

Mie 三重県 二見町 Futami

Amenouzume no Mikoto 天宇受売命
The deities in residence at 興玉神社 Okitama Jinja are Sarutahiko and Amenouzume no Mikoto.
Sarutahiko once caught the aura of tenson koorin (tenson kōrin 天孫降臨 tenson orin, descent of Ninigi to Ashihara no Nakatsukuni), so he went up to heaven to meet Ninigi half-way. At that time Tenson (Ninigi) introduced him to Amenouzume. At that point Sarutahiko became a Tengu and Amenouzume became O-Kame.
To pray to these two deities at the shrine will bring good fortune and a long family line.

Sarutahiko no okami, Uganomitama no okami (Ama no iwato), and Watatsumi no okami (in the Ryugusha).
The main deity enshrined here is Sarutahiko no okami, who guided Ninigi no mikoto in his descent from heaven to Mount Takachiho in Kyushu. Sarutahiko no okami is thought by many scholars to be originally a local kami of the region around Ise.
The most important physical feature of the shrine is located a short distance offshore. The meoto iwa 夫婦岩 ("husband and wife rocks," or "wedded rocks") are two famous large rocks, said to be husband and wife. The larger (male) o-iwa rock is about 30 feet tall by 131 feet around, while the smaller (female) me-iwa rock is about 13 feet tall by 30 feet around. The distance between the rocks is also about 30 feet at the base, which is traversed by thick straw ropes (shimenawa) hung around the peaks of both rocks.

The kami Sarutahiko is considered by some scholars to come from the toyoko no kuni or the ne no kuni, both believed to be lands across or under the sea, and the okimitama is said to be the place he first alighted. Sarutahiko is also thought by some to be a solar deity. Okitama was thought to be the gate to the palace of the sea god and a kind of yorishiro, or place for the sun kami to enter the world. Scholars have speculated that the original location of Ise Jingu was near the beach and that Okitama served as a yorishiro for Amaterasu's descent, when the first saigu (shrine princess) Yamatohime no mikoto came looking for a place to enshrine the sacred mirror. It is recorded that she found the land here so beautiful that she had to "look back twice" (futami ura).

An amulet sold at Okitama Shrine for people to "get back home safely" (kaeru 帰る) after the visit to Ise.

Happyaku Bikuni 八百比丘尼 / ハッピャクビクニ nun for 800 years
A poor grandfather's home had become the seasonal quarters of the 庚申講 Koshin Prayer Group and all members came to his house.
When they peeked into the kitchen, they saw a young girl cutting the fish. Only grandmother had eaten the fish, and she was a "young nun for 800 years".
Grandfather was in fact Sarutahiko - they say.

At 南魚沼郡 Minami Uonuma people make sure to offer fish for the Sarutahiko festival.

At the shrine at the top Sarutahiko is worshipped, at the shrine at the bottom of the mountain the deity 此花咲爺姫 / コノハナノサクヤビメ Konohana Sakuyabime is worshipped.
She is seen as a deity to get pregnant and provide easy childbirth. When women from 藤崎 Tozaki village come here to pray, they will give birth to a boy.

. Konjin, Konjin Sama  金神, 金神様 deity of metal .
Konjin Sama is a wild deity and often curses people.
Before removing earth from an estate or a field one has to ask a negi 禰宜 Shinto priest for purification rituals.
Rituals to ward off the wrath of Konjin sama have to be performed on the day of 庚申 Koshin.
If by error somebody hits a nail in the wrong place, he will get tooth ache or other illness. In that cast one has to call a mountain priest. The sand from 伊勢猿田彦神社 the Sarutahiko Shrine in Ise is also helpfull.

Tochigi 栃木県 足利市 Ashikaga city

During the annual Shrine festival three is a procession where a man with a Tengu mask leads a man with a mask of Sarutahiko through the town.
People are not allowed to watch this procession from above.

The man from China followed him to Japan. Sarutahiko asked Kannon for help and finally managed to kill the man from China.

Toogesama トウゲサマ . 峠さま deity of the pass
In the year 1955, someone had taken away the earthen wall from 猿田彦のトウゲサマ the Pass of Sarutahiko.
When he came home and took a bath, his skin suddenly became all strange ind seemed to come off and fly around the room.
The next morning he had rituals performed at the Shrine 三嶋神社 Mishima Jinja and taken the earth back to the pass.
After than he became well very soon.
