That day when they finished work and wanted to go back to the harbour, the sea suddenly turned wild and the boat capsized. Only one of the workers made it back to the shore alive.
Others found him mumbeling "this turtle, this huge sea turtle . . . " and then he breathed his last too.

- quote -
Map of Bushū Toshima Area, Edo (Bushū Toshima-gōri Edo no Shōzu)
武州豊嶋郡江戸庄図

This picture is representative of early Edo period illustrations and is considered to have been drawn in 1632 (Kaei 9). It is the oldest Edo map with accurate details according to current knowledge. It allows us to know the early Edo period town.
This illustration is a copy, but the original is assumed to be the oldest published map.
Beginning with the castle keep and Mt. Momiji, the pictorial technique is adapted to the topography of Nichieda Shrine, a reservoir to Mt. Atago and Zōjō-ji temple, etc., and the geographical expressions of other districts. It is said to be a transitional piece leading to the making of fully-fledged maps. Many similar types of drawings such as tracings and reproductions are in circulation and are generally called illustrations in the Kan'ei style.

Sugamo 巣鴨 Sugamo district "ducks nest"
Toshima ward, Sugamo sub-district 1 - 5.

The area used to be a set of swamps, where many water fowl hat their nest (su 巣), especially the ducks (kamo 鴨)- as is written in an old guide book of 1722.
But maybe there is a different reason for the name, which had been written with various characters :
須賀茂 洲鴨 菅面 洲処しやくじい面 洲処面
すが suga refers to a mound of sand carried along by a river, like a"a field of sand" 砂原.
Originally it was suga-mo.

In the Edo period, the Nakasendo Highway passed through the area and it begun to prosper as a rest station. Since 1737, townspeople were allowed to live here. Many gardeners came to live here.

EDO - Yushima Seido Temple

- quote -
Yushima Temple Picture (Seidō no Ezu)
The picture shows Yushima Temple, which still exists in Yushima, Bunkyō Ward, Tokyo, looked upon its completion.
It was in 1690 (Genroku 3) that Tsunayoshi, the fifth Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate who was interested in learning, moved the Confucius Temple Kōshi-byō to Yushima.
Aiming to advance Confucianism, Tsunayoshi, the fifth Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate, established a temple in Yushima and moved the Confucius temple and private school that had been located at the Hayashi's private residence in Ueno Shinobugaoka. This was the beginning of Yushima Temple. In 1797 (Kansei 9), Hayashi's private school was then founded as a school under the direct control of the Tokugawa Shogunate, "shōheizaka school" (also known as Shōheikō).
The school accepted not only Shogun retainers but also children from around the country who passed an entrance examination called "sodoku ginmi". From all over the country, young people who carried their clan's future with them gathered in Yushima.
Unfortunately, the "Kōshi-byō (Confucius temple)" illustrated in the picture was burnt down during the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 (Taishō 12). Today's temple was re-established in the 1930's (Shōwa).

kooshi 格子 means lattice, grid, Gitter
quote
Beautiful Women Dressed in Kimono with Benkei-style Pattern:
Chronicle of the Battle of Ichinotani (Shimazoroi Onna Benkei Ichinotani Futaba Gunki)
縞揃女弁慶 [一谷嫩軍記]
Painted by 歌川国芳 Utagawa Kuniyoshi 1844 (Tempō 15)
This is one of the pictures of series Mitate Bijin-ga (Ukiyo-e that portray beautiful women) comprised of ten pictures painted by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, an expert in the pictures of warriors. All the women depicted in this work are dressed in kimono with Benkei-style pattern (Benkei-gōshi) as the title says.
The series Shimazoroi Onna Benkei (Beautiful Women Dressed in Benkei-checked Kimonos) is a series of pictures of beautiful women dressed in "shima-moyo (checkered)" kimono that was very popular in the Edo period.
Benkei-jima (also called Benkei-goshi, or Benkei-check)" in this picture is one of the checked patterns with the same widths vertically and horizontally, which are woven with threads in two different colors. It was named after the stage costume of Benkei dressed in a mountain priest costume in the kabuki "Kanjinchō."
This series is made up of nishiki-e (colored woodblock prints) with the theme of "Benkei", and includes mitate-e (analogues) that remind us of the scenes about the stories of Benkei. A notice-board that a women holds in her hand and the waka (traditional Japanese poem), "I do not break a flower, but my nails cut quickly resemble a board to announce the order from the government" are assumed to be compared to the scene of "Kumagai Jinya", act 3 of "Chronicle of the Battle of Ichinotani (Ichinotani futaba gunki)."
