Horagai (法螺貝) (or jinkai (陣貝)
are large conch shells, usually from Charonia tritonis,
that have been used as trumpets in Japan for many centuries. The instrument, which has served a number of purposes throughout Japanese history, has been given a number of Japanese names depending on its function. Special schools still teach students to play the traditional music associated with the conch. The conch shell, blown as a trumpet, served a number of purposes in Japanese history. It is called jinkai (陣貝), horagai (法螺貝), or a number of other names in Japanese depending on its function.
The conch is perhaps most associated with its use by Buddhist monks for religious purposes. Its use goes back at least 1,000 years, and it is still used today for some rituals, such as the omizutori (water drawing) portion of the Shuni-e rites at the Tōdai-ji in Nara.Each Shugendo schools have his own conch schell melodies which can be recognised by every Yamabushi...
Unlike most shell trumpets from other parts of the world which produce only one pitch, the Japanese hora or horagai can produce three or five different notes. The process of transforming a shell into an instrument is kept somewhat secret, but it involves the attachment of a bronze or wooden mouthpiece to the apex of the shell's spire. At freezing temperatures (often encountered in the mountainous regions of Japan) the player's lips freeze to the metal surface, so some players prefer wooden or bamboo mouthpieces. The symbolism of the conch schell form inside the Buddhist Dharma is the sanscrit letter BAN which is Cosmic Buddha: Dainichi Nyorai.
The hora is especially associated with the yamabushi, ascetic warrior monks of the Shugendo sect. The yamabushi used the trumpet to signal their presence (or movements) to one another across mountaintops and to accompany the chanting of sutras.
In war, the shell, called jinkai, or 'war shell', was used as a signaling trumpet.
A large conch would be used and fitted with a bronze (or wooden) mouthpiece. It would be held in an openwork basket and blown with a different combination of "notes" to signal troops to attack, withdraw, or change strategies, in the same way a bugle or flugelhorn was used in the west. The trumpeter was called a kai yaku (貝役). The jinkai served a similar function to drums and bells in signaling troop formations, setting a rhythm for marching, providing something of a heroic accompaniment to encourage the troops and confusing the enemy by inferring that the troop numbers were large enough to require such trumpeters. Many daimyo (feudal lords) enlisted yamabushi to serve as kai yaku, due to their experience with the instrument.

North of the forest of 諏訪神社 Suwa Jinja there is a stone looking like a horagai 法螺貝 consh-shell.
If there are strange things to happen in the village, the stone makes a warning sound of a conch-shell.
Nearby is also a statue of 地蔵様 Jizo Bosatsu, and some call the stone
Jizo no horagaishi 地蔵のほらが石 conch-shell stone of Jizo.

Suwa Jinja no Kami 諏訪神社の神 The Deity of Suwa Shrine
The messenger of Suwa Shrine is hakuja (shirohebi) 白蛇 a white serpent. It came down on the river, riding on 「麻からのくき」.
The villagers from 塩沢部落 Shiozawa hamlet saw it first and now hold a festival in its honer at the Suwa Shrine on April 15 every year. During the festival, the mikoshi 神輿 portable Shrine in placed in a small hut erected for this purpose at the banks of the river 富士川 Fujikawa.
But one year they did not erect the small hut and and soon after densenbyoo 伝染病 an epidemic came over the hamlet.
This was the curse of the Deity. Therefore the next year they build the hut again and all went well.

Senju Kannon Bosatsu 千手観世音菩薩 Kannon with 1000 arms

Founded in 829 by on request of Emperor 淳和天皇 Junna (active 823 833) - to pray for the end of an epidemic, by 慈覚大師 Ennin Jikaku Daishi, who had come from Kyoto, 延暦寺 temple Enryaku-Ji .
Ennin copied the statue of 清水寺 the Kiyomizu temple in Kyoto, making one cut and praying three times for the healing of the people.
The temple was located at 平河 Hirakawa in Edo, where many people had died from an epidemic.
During the Edo period it was relocated to 馬喰町 Bakuro cho on request of 、徳川家康 Tokugawa Ieyasu.
In 1657 the temple burned down during the 明暦Meireki fire and was relocated to its present place.

Takasaki Town Mascot

The town of Takasaki, famous for the Shorinji-Temple and many Daruma goods, has choosen its new town mascot, Taka Maru Daruma. He wears a blue headband and has lively eyebrows.
His hands take the pose of the "Scissors, Stone and Paper", a popular game in Japan.




「高崎だるま」の地域ブランド認定を記念して、県達磨製造協同組合(中田純一組合長)が公募したマスコットキャラクターの入賞者が決まり、最優秀作品賞に埼玉県本庄市のグラフィックデザイナー、福島進さん(60)の「たか丸」が選ばれた。表彰式は五日、高崎市鼻高町の少林山達磨寺で開かれる「達磨まつり」で行われる。

高崎だるまは昨年十月、特許庁の創設した地域団体商標制度で地域ブランドとして認定された。PRに役立てるため、同組合は今年三月までマスコットキャラクターのデザインと愛称を公募。七歳から七十一歳まで計四十六点の応募があった。

「たか丸」は、青いねじり鉢巻きに、りりしいまゆ毛が特徴。同組合は今後、印刷物やイベントで活用する。市観光課も「たか丸」を市の知名度アップに役立てようと、着ぐるみを作製しており、表彰式で披露する。

表彰式は午後三時半から。午前十時からの 達磨まつり では、同組合員が手掛けるさまざまな表情のだるま五十二体を紹介する大型ポスターを掲示するほか、法要やチャリティーオークション、七弦琴しちげんきん奉納演奏などが行われる。

Sai no Kami is venerated in many villages. The Deity is also seen as a matsu 松 pine tree and often shirohebi 白蛇 a white serpent lives there. This serpent is seen as 塞の神の使い the messenger of the Deity.

If they try, they get painful swellings in the mouth.

Suddenly there was a great storm and three masks of 竜神 the Dragon Deity fell on the ground.
This is the beginning of the shishimai 獅子舞 lion dance of the village. From upriver of the 江戸川 Edogawa there came the masks of the Dragon Deity and when the villagers performed the dance with them, there would be rain.
After dancing for seven days and nights the masks were seen as kami no tsukai 神の使い the messengers of the Deity and the villagers performed their ritual dance.

Umenomiya Shrine 梅の宮神社 / 梅宮大社 in Kyoto
enshrines Oyamazumi-no-kami, the god who first brewed sake, and his child goddess Konohana-no-sakuyahime-no-mikoto. Nihonshoki, the oldest history book in Japan, records that Oyamazumi-no-kami congratulated Konohana-no-sakuyahime-no-mikoto on her childbirth by brewing sake for her. Therefore, sake brewers worship at the shrine.
Myth tells us that Konohana-no-sakuyahime-no-mikoto gave birth to a god, Hikohohodemi-no-mikoto, the day following her marriage. Thus, Umenomiya Shrine attracts women wishing for an easy delivery.

Matage-ishi and Ubu-suna are famous attractions at Umenomiya Shrine
It is said that a couple will be able to have a baby if they pray to the god for a child and then step over Matage-ishi. Empress Danrin was childless. However, she was able to have the next emperor, Ninmyo, because she stepped over Matage-ishi. Also, when Empress Danrin gave birth, she spread sand from under the main building of Umenomiya Shrine under her bed and gave birth to her son without complications. In some locales, the ubusunagami appears related to the ubugami, a tutelary of infants and pregnant women; in these cases, it is customary to pay respects immediately following childbirth at a small shrine (hokora) to the ubusunasama or ubugamisama located within the residential grounds.

In 引佐郡 the Inasa district at 奥山村 Okuyama village there is unagi no ido うなぎ井戸 a well where very large eels live. It is one of the seven wonders of 遠江 the Totomi area. The eel live there all year round and are seen as the messengers of the deity.
Some say this well has a connection to the waters of 長野の諏訪湖 Lake Suwako in Nagano.

It symbolizes the lotus which is on the top of the head of the Fudo Buddha.
When in town or during the ceremonies, the yamabushi can wear another cap: Eboshi (cap of the wing of the crow) the black cap of En-No-Gyoja, which has several folds like a Swatiska and a small protuberance to return the plait coiled on the top of the head.

Eboshi refers to a class of hats seen from at least the Nara period. They are uniformally of black cloth, usually hemp or similar, and later versions even used paper. The black color gave them their name, the Chinese characters translating to "bird hat" because it resembled the feathers of a black bird. Originally they were soft and pliable, going around the head and covering the hair, while often falling back, a style which remained common with commoners and was known as nae-eboshi (pliable eboshi). Eventually, the fabric was starched and lacquered, such that it took on a tall, upright shape. For nobles allowed into the palace, or tenjōbito, the erect tate-eboshi was the preferred style, while the lower ranking jige made do with the rakish kazaori-eboshi. The shape varied with the rank and position of the wearer, but nonetheless these were everyday hats, as opposed to the formal kanmuri cronw.
As the bushi rose in power and stature, they initially adopted more refined versions of the nae-eboshi, such as the hikitate-eboshi, which was convenient for wearing under a kabuto, particularly with the way it often was tied on. As the movement towards a more strong, crisp appearance came into fashion with emondō the samurai adopted a folded ori-eboshi that became the iconic headwear for centuries to come.
Though originally of starched or lacquered cloth, which was light and semi-opaque, later eboshi used thickly lacquered cloth or even paper to achieve the appropriate appearance. This style can still be seen at Shinto shrines and festivals, even today.

Nae-eboshi (萎烏帽子)
Nae-eboshi, or "soft" eboshi, is most commonly seen on commoners and men without official court rank. These hats were so called because their black fabric was pliable, allowing them to bend and twist. Unlike the more heavily lacquered hats of the court nobles, they would not be expected to stand on their own. This style actually encompasses a number of hats that were later utilized, including the heirei-eboshi, the hitai-eboshi, and the hikitate-eboshi.

Tate-eboshi (立烏帽子)
The tate-eboshi, or "standing eboshi," is your classic eboshi shape. Early Heian versions are usually tall, as seen here, and worn just off the back of the head (held in place by the motodori). For those without a motodori or similar hairstyle, the hat could incorporate cords that tie under the chin. These ties were thin, white cords that could be hidden in the eboshi construction or might be wrapped around the outside (particularly in later and smaller variations). These hats are typically straight along the sides, with a rounded, flat top. In the high center front there is a depression, called an "uya," which helps the hat hold its shape. Around the rim it typically a band of leather or similar material where the hat rests on the head.
Though lacquered, the weave for the Heian period version was open, and the hat itself was only semi-opaque, much like any single layer of clothing.

Kazaori-eboshi (風折烏帽子)
The name for this hat means "wind-swept eboshi," referencing the way the top is folded as though knocked aside by the wind. It was worn by jige, the lower ranking courtiers.
This hat shares much in common with the tate-eboshi, being made of the same material and even the same base pattern. It may or may not have an uya, or central depression on the front, and hidden or visible cords may be used if needed, though ideally it should sit on the motodori and thus a little off the back of the head. Over time, the lacquered fabric (or even paper) became much more stiff and opaque, as can be seen in the example to the right.
This shouldn't be confused with the hikitate-eboshi, which was a type of nae-eboshi, and though it was often twisted or folded back, it is quite different.

Hikitate-eboshi (引立烏帽子)
The hikitate-eboshi is a type of nae-eboshi that was adopted by the warrior class as they rose to power. Much like the tate-eboshi, it is a tall hat, and it often stands up and away from the head. However, unlike the former, it is only lightly lacquered, so it remains pliable, and does not make use of the uya. It was favored by warriors as it could be worn, even underneath a kabuto, though as time went on there were certainly some more high class variants that likely would have suffered under such treatment. .....

Ori-eboshi (折烏帽子)
This eboshi, is a latecomer to the party. Derived from the nae-eboshi in conjunction with the "strong" aesthetic of the emondō fashion, this folded hat became the standard for the samurai. For that reason, it was also called a "samurai-eboshi". .....

Most of the stories of ghosts are about people becoming ghosts and appearing as a dokuro 髑髏 skull.
In the old records Nihon Ryoiki, they were represented as dokuro 髑髏 skull. In the Heian period they were seen as the humans in their former life. When 宇多院 Emperor Uda (867 - 931) went to 河原院 Kawara-In, the former owner 源融公 Minamoto no Toru appeared in ikan 衣冠 formal working robes as a ghost to greet the visitor.

Brocade.
A general term for a variety of flat multicolored, woven-pattern fabrics. Recently it suggests silk woven with an uneven number of colors, usually blue, red, yellow, reddish purple and green, through supplementary weft patterns in glossed silks and metallic threads. The ground may be plain, twill, or satin weave and the weft threads go unbroken from selvage to selvage.
In the chromatically simple warp nishiki, tate-nishiki 経錦, a warp of different threads is combined with a single color weft for each row. The width of the cloth permits only a limited number of warp thread colors.
The more colorful weft nishiki, yoko-nishiki 緯錦 weaves any number of differently colored weft threads into a monochromatic warp.
The nishiki technique was developed in China and the earliest nishiki in Japan dates from the third century. Nara period nishiki feature hunting scenes, stripes, and, most frequently, flowers. By the Edo period the Nishijin 西陣 district of Kyoto had become the center of nishiki production.

昔、アブラヤでトオカミをしたら豊川稲荷が来た。「証拠を示せ」と言うと、しるしとして錦紗のきれとお守りを置いていった。アブラヤでは今でも家の裏に豊川稲荷を祀っており、その中に「しるし」を祀りこんだということだ。

棚晴という所にすむ肝煎棚晴頭の妻は、失踪して7年後にまた姿を現した。彼女は ryoora kinshuu 綾羅錦繍 Ryora Kinshu brocade を身にまとい、上に藻を覆っていたという。
